Reader's Trip to Rite Aid for $0.47!!

Do you want to see a great trip to the store?  One reader told me that she had a great trip to Rite Aid and some new couponers were asking about how they could get diapers and get into the drug store game.  I think that this is a great example of how great you can do at the drug stores.

Here is a picture of her receipt!!  She spent $0.47 out of pocket after wellness savings from the Rite Aid card and all coupons and Rite Aid UP rewards.  That is $0.10 plus tax!!  Bags of stuff for pocket change is always the best trips because you leave feeling amazed.

She got $30 of UP Rewards back to spend next time.

Couponers just cheered because they know how fun it is to use your UP Rewards to get things that you want and have more UP Rewards to use on their next purchase.

New couponers just said, "How do I do that?"  It just takes a little planning and it is a lot of fun!!!

Way to go Lisa from PA!!

Want to know more about the reader who had this wonderful trip? Lisa is a mother of 6 and Grandmother of 9 and has been couponing/refunding for 36+ years before it became "the thing to do". She started this journey a long time ago when her aunt gave her a refund magazine called "Moneytalk" and a rebate form for Duncan Hines cake mix for $1 cash. She was "HOOKED". Although she does not have a blog, she has many people tell her to have classes to teach this. But she has not taken the step to do so yet, maybe one day. She still learns so much to this day reading wonderful blogs about certain store deals etc. Love this hobby she has done for so many years. If anybody gets a chance, she recommends the book "Coupon Crazy" by Mary Potter Kenyon it tells you all the aspects about couponing/refunding from the good to the bad things that have happened through the years. When you read about Lisa from PA that is her!.

Balanced Book Review

Balanced: Finding Center as a Work-at-Home Mom by Tricia Goyer was a book that offered to me for review through Litfuse Publicity Group for free.  It is currently available on Amazon for your Kindle for $2.99 through the link through the books title and a variety of other locations so feel free to check out wherever you get your books.

The book was about balancing your home life with your work life if you work at home with lots of advice on how to do it.  There were short and easy to read chapters which included:

Chapter One—My Story of Finding Balance {And Some Practical Starter Ideas}

Chapter Two—How Your Work Benefits from You Being at Home

Chapter Three—How My Kids Benefit from My Work-at-Home-Ness

Chapter Four—What Does God Have In Mind When He Selects and Shapes a Person?

Chapter Five—Working and Serving from Your Core

Chapter Six—Becoming the Architect of Your Own Schedule

Chapter Seven—Successful {Not Stressful} Family Living

Chapter Eight—I Can’t Tell You How Many Times a Week I'm Asked, “How Do You Do It All?”

Chapter Nine—Being a Mom and Following Your God-Given Dreams . . . I Give You Permission

Chapter Ten—The Freedom of Knowing Yourself

Chapter Eleven—Balance Isn't the Ultimate Goal—Knowing God Is

How can a work-at-home mom raise kids, juggle a career and take care of family responsibilities with only 24-hour days? Working at home while raising kids and juggling a career and family responsibilities is no easy feat. Author and homeschooling mom Tricia Goyer shares her tips for finding balance among all your many hats as a mom. Balancing is a process and a journey, one that Tricia herself has yet to perfect. But between writing more than forty books, raising and homeschooling six kids, being a wife, and being active in her community, she has amassed valuable tips she shares in Balanced.

The book includes tips on:
-how to create focus themes for your family
-how to prioritize your schedule
-how to utilize your job so it also benefits your kids
-how to keep yourself out of the comparison game
-how to make working at home work for you and much more!

With a description like that don't all mom's have to read this book?  I decided that I would get this book because I used to work at home even though I am not working now (mostly) but hope to again soon if I can figure out how to balance it. When I worked at home before my son, if I didn't get work done during the day, I could just pick it up and work long into the night.  After having my son, I have to make sure that I have time for both my work and my son.  I also didn't have the flexibility to work all night long because I knew that I would be up early in the morning with my son ready to play.  It is always a balance to figure out how our lives work.

The problem that I had working from home is that people didn't respect that I was working.  There were often interruptions during my work day (especially from my parents).  It is very hard to set up boundaries while you are still in the same place because other people don't see the difference in the location so they don't think that you are working.  It is also hard to stop worrying about doing the dishes and laundry while finishing work instead.  It is much easier to ignore those things if you are in the office and the dirty clothes are at home.  There is always guilt about what you are not doing and the book talked about how you had to set priorities of what you were going to have time to do that day and not worry about the other things because they could be your priority on another day. The author's suggestion is to have office hours where you don't let anything interrupt you and make sure you have a flexible schedule based on what other things you have going on in the day.

The most valuable part of the book was the last few pages which gives a list of 38 different things that you can do to make the balance better from using the crock pot to making list and setting goals.  I thought that it was a little bit to general up until that point in the book.  There were some ideas like putting post it notes by areas that you are in case you get any ideas but the rest of it was putting the ideas in God's hands.  While I believe in God, I don't think that God is making decisions for us everyday but that we should make good decisions to be the best person that we can be.  There were too many quotes from the Bible and other locations and not enough of the authors actual thoughts for me to gain the best way to work towards balance but overall, I am glad that I read the book.

If you want to check out Tricia Goyer's website, you can find it here.  She writes many different types of books and there is information about them on her website.  There is also a post about this book here.
Tricia is hosting the Balanced Challenge. RSVP for the Balanced Facebook Party on March 10th and learn more about the challenge.

If you want to get more into each chapter, the challenge is the perfect way to do it.  Each challenge is a different day and a different chapter.  You can read the chapter and then blog (or facebook post) about the challenge.  The challenge starts on March 11th with the first challenge listed below:

March 11: Family Priorities (Chapter One)
Determine what your priorities as a family are. Ask yourself a few questions: What do we want to achieve as a family? What will matter five years from now—ten years from now? What will mold our children into God-serving adults? What will bring peace—not stress—to our home?

If you are interested in this topic, I hope that you check out all of these different links and get involved in this very interactive book through reading and all the different sources.  It is a step above just a book and allows lots of different accountability.  Are you a work at home mom and want to learn how to better balance your life?  Check out this e-book and see how you can quickly improve your life.

*I was provided this book free electronically for my review but my opinions are my own.

February Reading Review

I started off finishing the first book in the wee hours of the morning on the first day and had finished.  The rest of the month went along a lot like that with many nights spent up reading the end of the book before going to sleep.  I finished 4 books in the first week of the month.  I did get a few more books from the library but broke it up with something other then the Stephanie Plum novels although I think that I might be through the whole series in just a few short months.  The great part about finding a series after it is already written is that you don't have to wait for the next one to come out!!

I made an agreement with a friend to read a list of books that are going to be made into movies this year so I put them all on reserve at the library and I read one this month, The Giver and I have a few more coming in from the library reserve system so you should see a few more books that are soon to be movies.  I am interested it see if those made anyone else's reading list and what you thought.

Here are the books that I read this month.  If you missed the review, make sure you click on the title and it will take you back to the original post.  I hope that you add a few on to your must read list!

March Challenge Take 3!

I have a new blog that I love to read which you can check out here.  Make sure you note that she is in Canada so some things sound a little different then the United States but I find her blog to really interesting.  It talks a lot about budget and financing.  She has a new challenge for March to Take 3 (cause it is the third month).  It consists of three goals: Personal, Financial, and Decluttering.  Please join us in the challenge and set your own goals.

Here are my goals for March:

Personal-

  • Read at least 6 books in March
  • Go to exercise class at least once a week (or at least 4 times in the month)
  • Meet with some of the schools that we are looking at for my son

Financial-

  • Set up Roth IRAs for myself and my husband
  • Decide what we are doing about a 529 for my son
  • Continue to maintain grocery budget of $160 for the month

Decluttering-

  • Continue selling on ebay and aim for $50 profit in March
  • Gather all yard sale items and tag and box them to be ready for yard sale in either April/May in friend's neighborhood (including making my husband go through some of his stuff which usually doesn't happen).

I already got started by making some phone calls and appointments. We are going to meet with a financial person and my son's school so that we can move forward with the goals.

Do you have any goals that you would like to accomplish this month? Join us in working to meet your goals!!

Menu Plan Monday 3/3

Monday- Chicken and Rice Casserole
Tuesday- Buffalo Chicken Pizza (and maybe some White Garlic Pizza for me)
Wednesday- Leftover Chicken Fingers with mac and cheese
Thursday- Buffalo Chicken Salad with crumbled blue cheese
Friday- Tacos with spicy saffron rice
Saturday- Leftovers/Philly Cheese Steak Pasta
Sunday- Leftovers/Frozen Pizza

This week is a special week long celebration for my husband's birthday.  He isn't really big on sharing details about it like the date of his birthday but I am making all of his favorite foods so that he is super happy.  Isn't that good present to eat all your favorite stuff all week?  The only thing that I need to get is cheddar cheese and I am all set for the yummy week.  Does that mean that I get all my favorites next week?  Probably not but I will work in a few through the month.  I am working on finishing the rest of the months meal plan so that I have the rest of the month planned out too.

What are you having this week?

Weekly Goals 3/2

I can't believe how much I got done in a week and it seems like Super Doubles was over ages ago (especially since I got everything to fit into the cupboards).  I worked this week and still got in time to get lots of things done.  I made a to do list on Friday that was the whole side of a piece of paper so I knew that I needed to get a lot done and I pushed and did most of it on Friday with a few things carrying over to the weekend.  I am exhausted and ended up taking a nap instead of doing everything that I should have gotten done on Saturday but it was the end to a great week.  I hope that you had a productive and relaxing week too!!!

Last week:

Family Goals
  • Spend time with family- We had lots of fun with a bowling party and an afternoon of family movies so it was lots of fun getting some quiet time with everyone.
  • Playdate with friends and it is the mom's birthday- We went to the park with friends and the mom got a special surprise that she was treated to a day off and a massage so I met up with the dad and his kid.  My son didn't even take a second look because it was his dad and not his mom and they went to playing although one mom on the playground asked me how far apart they were and when I said 6 months, I realized that she thought they were both mine.  Nope!
  • Playdate with friends after school (another mom and I are switching days picking the kids up from school so we get one day with no kids for most of the day and then another where the kids entertain each other so it is the best of both worlds so this should be my free day)- My son went to their house this time and he had a blast.  It was not fun trying to drag him out of there but he slept really soundly that night and we got him to sleep all the way until 7 am.  I told her whatever she did, she was welcome to do it anytime.
Personal Goals
  • Get coupons on Friday or Saturday- I got them on Friday at the library and my husband stopped and got a few at Giant so it was great to get out of the way.
  • Shut off computer 6 nights to save energy- I shut off the computer every night this week and got it off for most of the days that we weren't here and when we left.
  • Finally back to Jazzercise??- Even though I wasn't feeling great, I went on the only day that I had time so I at least got back into the routine.
  • Post additional coupons for sale to ebay- I posted a few more coupons to end out the month which should close in the next few days.  I made it over $50 this month so that was my goal.  I am hoping to be able to do it every month and see how long I can do it before getting burned out because it is a lot of work but it makes a little money so we will see how long it is worthwhile.
  • Get two or three more trips in to Harris Teeter Super Doubles- I wish that they had a little more stock but I made all of my trips and sadly didn't get all of the things that I wanted and I forgot some of the rain checks again when I had forgot to write them down so it was sad to see it over but hopefully I will be able to use the rain checks and coupons next time.
  • Make menu plan for March- Well, this has been a problem because I have the calendar and I even updated the list of freezer items and I keep staring at the page and not being able to get very far.  I put a few things on the list and then stop because I just can't get in the mood for thinking about food.  I think that it is a good thing to do when you are hungry and not tired...sadly, there aren't many times that I am not often hungry and not busy making a meal.  I have a few things filled in and there are a lot more to go.  I am going to work more on it tomorrow and cross my fingers that I get it all done.
  • Finish Wild book (true story which is going to be made into a movie soon)- I finished and posted the review so you should see it soon.
Home Management Goals
  • Clean dishes, counters and floors at least 5 days of the week- I did the keep the kitchen pretty clean this week but I had another messy week so I cleaned the floor and got down on my hands and knees to scrub it more.  It ended up much better then how I started and it was a great thing to keep us much cleaner for the coming week.
  • Clean dishes one night and not wait until the morning- We did this together earlier this week and then we did leftover night on Saturday so all the dishes were done and in the dishwasher to start the week off on the right foot.
  • Schedule tree removal in back yard- We scheduled the tree removal Tuesday and it was done on Wednesday and the stump was removed on Thursday.  The yard looks bigger with it gone and we are one step closer to figuring out how we are going to fix our fence.
  • Take the remaining fence posts out of the back yard to remove fence- We got a few of the fence posts out but some of them they are very heavy with cement so it is going to take a little bit more work to get them pulled out so my husband is going to have to get some extra hands.
Blog Goals
  • Post one post everyday (schedule 7 posts so that can spend more time with family) - I got all my posts scheduled this week ahead of time and I had a lot of extra time which I filled up with fun things with my son.
  • Review book reviews completed during the week (if done)- Review is posted and list of all of the books that I read in February should be coming up soon to.
  • Work on a few posts to work ahead for the coming week- I got a few posts up for the coming week and I have to look at it and see what else I need to get done but I think that I am on to a new week and totally prepared.
  • Post Sunday Weekly Goals, Menu Plan Monday, Kid Wednesday and Thrifty Thursday Tip- Got everything posted this week.

Wild Book Review

Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail (Vintage) by Cheryl Strayed was one of the books on the list of books that are going to be made into movies this year.  I think that I already saw an ad for this movie so I was interested to see what the book was about since I didn't know anything about it.  I was waiting to pick it up because I thought that it was going to be a scary book about someone stuck out on a trail trying to make life or death decisions about eating a friend like some of those hiking movies show.  Rest assured that this was nothing like that and I could read it while going to bed and not be too upset about the book.

The book starts with Cheryl loosing her boot off the edge of a cliff and throwing the other one over since one boot is not going to do her any good.  The book goes a little back in time and tells you about how Cheryl decided to make the trip to the PCT and why.  There are so many reasons behind her trip but one thing is very clear that she was not prepared for this challenge because it is very hard to travel by yourself and she hadn't practiced carrying her bag, worn in her boots or opened any of the packages and she was leaving the next morning.  You have to pick up this book to find out all of the adventures and scrapes that she gets herself into in her travels and her previous life.

I loved the book!  There is nothing like making you appreciate your life when you see how hard other people's lives have been.  Through an abusive childhood, to a rural upbringing, and the loss of her mother, Cheryl is dealing with lots of emotional upheaval and trying to decide what she is going to do with her life.  There are so crazy stories that she relives during her trip on the PCT and tries to resolve by the end of her trip.  I couldn't be more happy that I picked up this book and learned
