Freebie Friday: Summer Reading Programs for Adults

Since my son had already participated in the summer reading program at the library and gotten a cool coupon book which got him lots of free stuff, I decided that I would check out a few things too.

I read the 10 books which you know isn't hard since I love reading and can't put a book down.  The one local library is closing soon so that give out a coupon to get 10 free books.  I decided that I would pick them out while my son was in a library program and changed my mind a ton of times but this is what I came home with.

I don't know a lot about them except that I haven't read them so I figured that I would enjoy reading them on our trip to the beach and not taking library books which always makes me nervous.  Who can beat the price?!

I went to another local library and turned in the sheet for the same 10 books and they only gave out one free book so I went through their much small display and picked out this one.  I like the author and the library doesn't carry any books by her so I figured that would be a good read even if it was in the middle of a series.

We went to a new library and they had a program so I got another 5 free books with my reading there.  I needed to fill out the sheets with 5 books each so I started writing and got the coupon limit to get 5 books.

I can't wait to fill out my next sheet for more libraries and come home with another pile of books for free!!  I think that there is plenty of time in the summer to read at least 10 or 20 more books.  I did get the coupon for getting ten free books at one of the libraries so I might be able to pick those soon but it takes awhile to sift through the books and find 10 books that I really want, especially with my 6 year old helper who doesn't think that it is fun!!  I am going to have to check to see what I have already read since then and see how many more I need to get more books!!!

Have you checked around your area for summer reading programs??

Freebie Friday: Kids Summer Reading Programs and more

My son is doing well with his summer reading (although sometimes it is still a fight to get in the 20 minutes for the day).  His school promised if they got enough reading from all of the kids that they would have a bounce house for them when they got back to school.  He was so excited when he brought back the special calendar to fill it out.  I have had to come up with other goals to try to help him.

The first every summer is to do the summer reading program at the library.  He reads the 15 books and then he gets his name on the wall and a coupon book.

We have already used the coupon book to get a free flash light, marigold seeds, pencil, strange plastic bug (not pictured because my son hid it on the window), ear buds, zipper pouch, book and box of ice cream sandwiches.  There are so many other coupons in the book and I hope that we get to use a lot of them.  Sadly, the summer usually runs out before we get to use them all but we always get a good haul!

We love to do lots of stuff over the summer and free is always good.  We have done three of the AC Moore programs where we get to make different crafts for free.  The first was my favorite because it was on the summer bucket list to make a tie dyed t-shirt. He picked the bullseye pattern and the other two kids that I brought used the twist pattern.  They put the rubber bands on the shirts, dipped them in water and then used squirt bottles over a plastic bin and colored the shirt.  We let it set for 24 hours and rinsed it out and this is what it looked like after.  It was pretty fun and now he gets to wear the t-shirt all the time as a reminder of our fun summer project.

Then we went back to make the bucket.  It isn't exactly functional like I was hoping because they just gave him stickers because the picture online looked like it was painted but my son and his friend had a blast making them.  They were slow when we got there so the nice ladies pulled out extra stickers so they could spell their name on the side.  We are not going to be bringing this to the beach because I think that the stickers will collect lots of sand and I think that it is a better bucket to hold things on his dresser where it is now.

We went back another week to do the decorate your own cupcake.  They had cupcakes from the local grocery store already made and they put it on the paper towel for the kids and they had tubes of frosting in a few crazy colors and small sparkly gel frosting in green and yellow.  My son had trouble getting the frosting out of the tube because no matter how many times you tell them that they have to squeeze from the end down, they think you can squeeze at the end and it works the same but it just doesn't.  It is the toothpaste fight all over again!  He loved to decorate with those colored candy balls (which were like small jawbreakers) and yellow sugar to top off his beautiful creation. He still had a blast decorating this cupcake and even more fun eating it out front of the store since I wasn't sure it was going to make it home in the heat without melting.

All of these projects are easy ones that you can do at home but we really enjoyed going out and getting to do it with some friends and adding some reading really makes the summer go by quickly.  I hope that you enjoy your summer and get a bunch of neat things just for enjoying your summer all year long with the memories!!

Got Lots of Books for a Quarter!!!

We headed to the library for a day of fun with my son and grandma (my mom, his grandma).  We got to watch movies based on fairy tales.

I noticed on the way into the program that they had extra books out for sale with their holiday book sale.  While we were watching the movie, I dug around in my wallet and found that I had my summer reading certificates and it gave me $10 in free books!  I was so excited to finally use my summer reading program coupons (especially since they expire December 31st) to get free books at one of my local libraries.  For the above pile, I paid a quarter!!!  I got three for my son, one for me, three magazines for my dad and the rest for my mom.  Super great Christmas present for my parents with only a quarter out of pocket!!! 14 items for $0.25 makes me happy!

How did you get these certificates?  I read a bunch of books this summer and brought back the list to the library and they gave me a coupon to get books later.  Make sure you check on reading programs through libraries because there are some great deals you can get from doing reading that you want to be doing anyway!!!

"Free" Lotion at CVS

I got a link to a facebook deal that CVS was offering free lotion on their facebook page if you liked them and printed the coupon.  I decided that I would be going there anyway so I should print it so that I could pick it up.  The coupon was expiring and I had not yet made it there.  Another thing on the to do list that was moved to the next day over and over without getting done.

With the coupon expiration hours away, I ran out tonight to get the lotion.  I looked all over the store and didn't find it anywhere.  I found a few other options and brought it to the front to see what the clerk would say.  She didn't know if they were anywhere in the store and there was a line already formed behind me.  Luckily, Steve, the store manager, came up.  I told him that I could find any and if there was somewhere else that I might look.  He walked towards the Christmas gift display that had some other items and on the side shelf, I saw one lone lotion sitting there.  I grabbed it and asked if it was the right one.  He price checked it and said that it was the right one but it was $2.19.  The coupon was for $1.99 maximum value for the below product:

I had gone all the way to the store and involved the store manager so I pulled out my change purse and paid my $0.21 but the more I thought about it, the more misleading I found the promotion.  I realize that CVS put out the promotion to bring someone into the store so that they would buy other things but I think that it was their own product that the coupon should be the value that they are selling it in the store.  I can't believe that different stores set the price as they want to and the coupon was either for a free lotion or it should have just been for $1.99 off whatever CVS Essence of Beauty product that I wanted.  I know that there are lots of others things to address but I am still trying to decide if I should write a note to customer service to let them know.  I guess I will add it to the to do list :)

Love the Library

The library is a great place to go!!!  We went this morning to return the big pile of books that we had and listen to storytime.  The best part is that it is free.

1. Return books that you got because you have already read them- free
Great for books adults are only going to read once and kids books that you have already read 20 times.

2. Get more books to read- free
I got two cookbooks and an organization book to try out and my son picked out tons of Maisy, Ms. Spider, Curious George, Thomas and others so that we would have new books to read this week.

3.  Entertaining kids with storytime- free
When they aren't interested, you can leave and not feel like you are loosing money you just spent.

All that fun under one roof- priceless!!!!  I hope that everyone takes advantage of the great public library system and reads a few books that they are interested in.

Free pictures at Walgreens

Until Saturday December 31st at 11:59PM, you can get 25 free pictures through Walgreens website by using the code printnow.  If you haven't used their site before, uploading photos and printing is very easy.  You can choose a local store and it costs nothing to get updated on pictures for your photo album.

I have been working very hard on getting my son's albums up to date (or at least moving foward).  I vowed after the last dale where I had to come up with so many pictures that my fingers ached from all the computer work that I would take some time to fix read eye and put all the pictures that I wanted to print in file so that I was ready.  This project, as many others, has moved to the bottom of the list so that more boring things could be done like taking a nap or reading a book.  I am sure that I will try to get some of the pictures up today so that I can take advantage of the deal.  I hope that you have some great holiday photos to print and share with friends or a photo album sitting empty on the shelf waiting for lots of new prints!!!!
