November Month End Shopping and Eating Out Budget Update

I work hard to stay under my $160 monthly budget every month using sales, coupons and gift cards to get the best deals to stock up on.  Getting to the end of the year means that I know how I am doing for the whole year which has been a little bit higher then I have been in past years.  I am also above the average for both monthly grocery spending and take out spending.  The great news is that I already had a turkey in the freezer for Thanksgiving so I wasn't out looking for the deal on that this month.  The bad news is that the local paper only including Smart Source inserts and the prices of groceries increasing means I haven't been getting as many deals in recent months. 

I just realized that I didn't get the end of the month budget review posted earlier because I kind of missed the month ending.  I know that I was at the store a lot at the beginning of the month and not as much at the end of the month because of the holiday and family visiting.  The beginning of the month posts are broken down in my half post here so I removed the descriptions here but left the picture and the amount spent on each transaction.  All of the transactions from the second half of the month have the total spent, picture and the break down of what I got at the store.

There was a weekend deal to get cereal where they were $0.99 each and I had a coupon for $1 off 3.

We were out of potatoes and iceberg lettuce so I got them here because they were cheaper then Aldi.  I got the turkey lunch meat on sale and my friend printed me a coupon because I used mine and couldn't print anymore.

I was out of all of this and decided to run to the store to get  marshmallows for Rice Krispie Treats and celery for the Thanksgiving stuffing.  We needed shortening for the deep fryer.  We were out of cheese and bananas so I got some of them.

I went to Target and used a gift card for these and got a little Christmas gift with what was left of the gift card.

I was super sick and went to the store to get medicine.  They gave me a coupon for $1 off Softsoap and I got a $1 ECB so this was free.  I got $3 back in ECB and I didn't make it back to the store to spend.  I hate doing that but I am so much out of the game that I am going to just call it a win on the one soap.

We went to get soda and we had to go to two different stores before we found the ones that we wanted.  It didn't seem like too hard of an order but the first store was out of all Fanta and the we almost those the second store was out of Sprite but my husband found it on an end cap.

My parents went to Aldi to get a few things and ended up throwing in all this stuff for us so it was a great bonus grocery shopping trip that didn't come out of my grocery budget.

Amazing stock up month with 70 boxes of pasta and 40 pounds of flour.  I also got a lot of meat which has been enjoyed and frozen to enjoy later.  I made a bunch of pumpkin and chili to freeze to add to my stockpile.  Love having quick meals in the freezer in case there isn't time to make dinner.

Eating Out

We got Pizza Hut for $8.47 at the beginning of the month and enjoyed some yummy pizza.  We got another pizza later in the month for $8.47 ad then again the next weekend for $8.47.  My parents bought us Chinese food which was a yummy dinner and leftovers for lunch the next day with even more leftovers to use in fried rice.  I took my parents to First Watch for lunch while we were out shopping and they super enjoyed it (looking at the calendar it was actually December but still including it).  Best part is that I used my gift card so it was nothing out of pocket.  Total Spending $25.41 spent for the month

End of the Month Budget Update for February

I took a look at the numbers from last year and February was my no spend month.  I was going to do the same this year but we spent most of the year at the bottom of the budget so I figured that I would still get all of the deals and things that we needed.  My budget is $160 for all household goods for a month so here is what I got.

Aldi $15.48

I was going to the store to get the red potatoes that were on sale for $1.19 for a 5 lb bag so I decided two.  We have really enjoyed them to have diced hash browns on the weekends for breakfast and some nice breakfast for dinner meals.  Probably could have bought another one and we would have still used them because we love diced hash browns!!  We only have a few potatoes to take us over to March.  We were out of milk, stick margarine and chicken (which was on sale for $1.49).  I grabbed a lime for $0.25 because I decided that I was going to make lime chicken tacos with some of that chicken.  My son picked out the marshmallows as a special treat for himself.

Aldi  $8.95

My husband went to the store to get a few things on the list and as always it came with its challenges because they didn't have my son's chicken fries and the celery was too expensive.  We needed turkey lunch meat for my husband's sandwiches for lunch.  The bananas were on sale pretty cheap so he went through them and picked out the "prettiest" ones (his words- not mine) and he had some for breakfast and left me enough to make banana bread and one more for the freezer so that I had enough bananas to make another loaf of banana bread in March.  He also grabbed some popcorn chicken so that I could make his buffalo chicken for dinner for the coming month.

Harris Teeter $50.70

I went to get the Quaker Granola bars and went a little crazy with the deals.  There was a deal where if I spent $25 on certain items including the Quaker Granola Bars, Quaker Oatmeal, and Frosted Flakes, I got $5 off instantly.  I wasn't sure if it was before or after coupons or sales.  I decided that it was a good deal so I got 6 boxes of Quaker Oatmeal at $2.00 (after sale and coupon).  I grabbed four boxes of granola bars for $1.97 each or $7.88.  I got Frosted Flakes for $1.50 per box (which is way more then I would normally pay but all for my cause and cheaper then more oatmeal).  It was $22.88 after sales and coupons and I got the additional $5 off so all 12 boxes were $17.88 or $1.49 each.  Not the best deal to chase after but the pantry is certainly packed now.

I used a rain check to get ketchup because we were totally out (and it is a major food group for my son) so I got them for $1.49 after rain check and coupon.  I used another rain check for the Texas Pete Hot sauce so it was Buy 2, Get 3 Free but I could use coupons like I was buying 10 so I got $5 off and ended up paying $2 for all ten of them!!!  I also used a rain check for the Yoplait GoGurt for my son and I had no coupons so I was looking forward to getting an Ibotta rebate which for some reason it wouldn't go through!!  UGH!  Tried twice and they have bad customer service with no help.

I bought Smart Balance butter with coupon for $2.09 each because the butter that I bought before was not a hit so we were totally out.  We also needed milk so I got it here for $2.99 and put in a Ibotta rebate to get $0.25 back.  We have been going through a lot of eggs so I grabbed them at $1.57 and there was a $0.25 rebate from Ibotta.  We also wanted to get lettuce for tacos and it has been high priced at Aldi recently so I got it for $1.69 here and got a Checkout 51 rebate for $0.25.

There were a few great deals.  I had a money maker on Gerber Graduates oatmeal for a profit of $0.46.  There was another money maker on the Beyond Dog Jerky for $1.01 profit.  The Lipton tea was $0.01 money maker and I might get money back from Saving Star too.  I got Hamburger Helper for $0.25.  I got the Daisy Sour Cream for $0.89 and got a Ibotta rebate for $0.50.  I finally was at the store to get the freebie from Saving Star for the York Peppermint Patty so I should get the $0.99 back for it soon.

There was a little splurge to get a few things that we didn't need. I bought a little bit more chicken for $1.99 per pound so this was $5.61.  I got the mozzarella cheese for $2.99 for a 16 oz block.  I also bought some Franks Red Hot for $0.59 each which was a huge splurge for the brand my husband likes best when I just bought 10 other hot sauce but it was a good price.

I was really surprised when they told me the total but who knows what I did.  I got a lot of food and used a lot of rain checks to save even more money.  I guess that this is what regular people feel like when they go grocery shopping but it was a little bit of a shock to my system.



Aldi $9.99

I stopped to grab the chicken fries which my husband didn't get and always has a problem with.  We were out of parmesan cheese so I grabbed that too.  I got four packages of stick margarine to stock up to do some baking. 

CVS $2.74

I sent my husband on a mission to mail the taxes, drop of my prescription, take my son to the library to do his reading, and pick up my prescription.  I guess too many trips in CVS made it hard to not bend to the pressure but they bought a box of hot tamales and sour patch kids.  Both are mostly gone!!  I was a little sad but we were well under budget so it was a splurge but not a failure (right Nathalie?)

Aldi $13.71

I took one more trip to Aldi because we needed turkey lunch meat.  I saw a box of popcorn so I grabbed three more because we have used so many of our popcorns from the stockpile and they are "seasonal" at Aldi so took the chance.  I grabbed saltine crackers which is great because my husband has almost finished it because he has been eating soup to try to get over his cold.  I also got some more oyster crackers to make my seasoned oyster crackers for my husband's lunch next week.  We were running low on pepperoni so I got a package of it at the end of shopping.  I went to check out and the lady in front of me said that the grapefruit were really great.  I grabbed one for $0.29 and turned in the rebate for $0.25 from Checkout 51 so it was a great bargain.

I was under budget for the month so I got lots of things that I needed and a few things that we wanted.  We had a lot of baked goods that I made through the month and lots of home cooked meals from the fridge, freezer and pantry.  Not a lot of things from this month ended up stocking the cabinets but the Frosted Flakes, Oatmeal, Granola Bars, and margarine.  I also cut the chicken into 9 meals between the two different purchases which we already ate three.  Mainly lots of hot sauce!!!

January Month End Budget Update

With way too little shopping accomplished with the snow storm that shut us down and too much work, I ended up way under budget for the month.  I did get a lot during Super Doubles but I skipped a few days which I was a little disappointed in but my son and I both came down with a sickness so we were fighting it off instead of getting the great deals.  Stocked up on toilet bowl cleaner, laundry detergent, tea bags, hot dogs and cheese but not a lot of other foods.  There are rumors of more super doubles on the weekend so I will see if I end up with a last minute January purchase.

There were a lot of great meat deal with clearance stickers on a ton of meat so I filled up on tons of deals.  I spent more then I expected coming in but got tons more food then I was expecting to pick up.

I used a rain check to get the Lysol toilet bowl cleaner to save over $5.18 on the transaction and a rain check to get a free chocolate bar.  I earned $0.25 on Ibotta for the All Laundry Detergent.  I got free Listerine dental floss, Celestial Seasoning tea, Lipton family tea bags, Lipton regular bags and Old El Paso Taco Shells.  The rest were still great deals!!

Harris Teeter $4.59

I grabbed some more free Celestial Seasoning tea, Lipton tea and Colgate.  I paid only $0.04 for the Barilla pasta sauce which I put in to get a rebate on Ibotta for $0.25 so it was a money maker.  I bought the pie crusts because they were $0.69 for all 4 pie crusts so I thought it might even be cheaper then making them so they are going in the freezer (unless I decide to make a pie).  I got the orange juice to fit off the sickness and splurged at $1 and put in a rebate for $0.25 in Ibotta.

Aldi $6.72

I didn't get to stop at Aldi as I planned for my husband stopped on the way home from work to pick these things up because we needed lettuce and milk.  We needed the confectioners sugar for the frosting and the light brown sugar for cookies.  YUM!

Harris Teeter $19.64

I got in one more trip to get some deals.  I picked up some free Celestial Seasonings tea, Lipton tea bags, Colgate toothpaste, and Grands Biscuits.  I paid $0.04 for the Barilla sauce even though I couldn't turn in the rebate again because it was too soon.  I used a rain check to get the Lysol toilet bowl cleaner and saved $5.18 additional.  I was happy to put two more Jet Dry in my cart at $2.61 because my dishwasher works much better with it and they are shelf price of $5.39 which is CRAZY!!  I grabbed two more All Free and Clear Detergent for $0.99 each (instead of shelf price $5.49).

I paid $1.00 for the Panko bread crumbs and used them for dinner shortly after which is why I splurged because I like to mix them with homemade bread crumbs to stretch them.  I got 6 packages for cheese for $1.50 each but didn't get the catalina for money off the next transaction and totally forgot to check with customer service because the lines were so long!! UGH!!!

CVS -$1.20

I went to CVS to get some hair color for my mother per her request.  I decided to do the deal on the Coke products.  I got 6 cases and used 5 coupons to get free Coke.  I paid $3.80 for the Coke and got $5 ECBs back.  I bought my mom's hair coloring and used a coupon and my ECBs to pay less.  She paid me back for what I spent and the $5 so I subtracted the $5 from this transaction so that I had much less out of pocket thanks to Coke Rewards, Nathalie for giving me the heads up on the coupons and my mom for paying me back for the other transaction!

Aldi $0

My mom picked up some stuff for me at Aldi which I took a picture of on the belt because she is super weird about me taking pictures of all of my groceries.  I grabbed four bottles of $0.99 Molasses (Thanks Nathalie!!! I was going through the store hugging it!! ).  We also got milk, vegetable shortening, margarine, apricot preserves, chicken fries, ice cream bars, caramel bits, oyster crackers, fruit snacks, bananas, and celery.  She also bought me some dish detergent at Target because I didn't know we were going to Aldi but I was totally out of it from all the dishes that we ran.  The total was $26.06 on the items from Aldi.

Aldi $16.54

During the snow days, we finally got out of the house so I took that chance to grab some stuff at Aldi.  We were totally out of popcorn chicken (my husband's favorite to have his buffalo chicken).  My son wanted to use the heavy whipping cream to make ice cream in some ice cream maker so I bought it.  We only had a few potatoes left so I grabbed another 10 lb bag because it was $2.99 this week instead of $3.99 like it has been.  We were low on oil and I know that my son has been enjoying his popcorn and the good news is that it was $1.99 and it has been higher recently.  I grabbed an emergency pepperoni because I wasn't sure how low we were.  I knew that we were almost out of lunch meat and my husband was going to eventually go back to work and we only had a few days of lunch meat left.  I knew that I could get them because I added up the budget and we were way under :)  which was the bonus of getting this post done early with all the snow!!!

I got $0.25 for pasta sauce, orange juice and laundry detergent for $0.75.  I put in a rebate for Ibotta but they said that they couldn't read it so I had to try again because there is no way to fix it.  I contacted customer service and they never responded so I decided to try again for the $2.00 on my dad's receipt which luckily he left here but the deadline passed on the rebate to submit for the receipt so I might have lost the money anyway :(

MobiSave $1.10

I got $0.30 for some bananas that my mom bought and $0.30 for lettuce and $0.50 for milk which are all purchases from Aldi!!  Love that I found some place that does rebate for the already low prices

**ADDITION UPDATE **

After making this post, I decided that I would go get the sales at Harris Teeter and use lots of rain checks which was still in January because we got a little extra day.  I used a rain check for the Cheez-Its for 2/$5 (shelf price $4.99), Quaker Chewy Bars 2/$4 (shelf price $2.59), Honey Nut Cheerios $1.97 (shelf price $3.49), and Finish Detergent B1G1 (shelf price $4.39).  The rain checks saved me the following $14.94 + 3.54 + 3.04 + 8.78= $30.30.  I also used coupons to save me a little more on each item!!  The Cheez-Its were $2 each after rain check and coupon.  The Quaker Granola Bars were $1.50 each after rain check and coupon.  The Honey Nut Cheerios were $0.99 each which is way above my normal spending price but my husband said that he needed cereal.  The Finish was $1.10 each after rain check and coupon.

I got a few deals that weren't all rain checks.  The main reason that I went it is to get the chickens for $0.89 per pound which made the chickens about $5 each so I bought 4 of them.  I got the Windex with vinegar for $2, Franks Wing sauce for $0.74, Olive Oil for $6.39, Smart Balance Butter $1.29 and Gerber food for $1 each.  I went crazy and got the Rubbermaid water bottle because my husband lost his at Target last week and they were on sale for 30% off and there was a coupon so I got it for $5.29 instead of $9.

Oops!!!  I left these in the back seat because I didn't want them in the trunk to break.  They were on sale for $2.77 less the coupon so they were $1.77 for 18 count eggs.

Kind of amazed with that huge trip to the store and I stayed under the monthly budget!!  I am excited and I think that I got most of the things that were on my list for February so I am going to have to see what I need to get for the coming month!

Middle of the Month Shopping Update

Okay, this month this might be more for me then you but I can't believe that it is the middle of the month.  I thought that I was doing pretty well this month with the monthly meal plan done so I didn't think that there was much more that I need but I was wrong!  We needed a lot and I was ignoring the cabinets as they were running bare.  I made way too many trips to the store for half of the month but the good news is that it is nearly over so one more big trip and I will hopefully be done for the month (and under budget with any luck).

Wegmans $1.27 + $30.74= $32.01

I went to Wegman's with my son to get some more ground beef.  I had some coupons for $3 off $15 and $1 off Health and Beauty and $1 off the cheese shop which I was trying to use. When I was there I found another coupon for the cheese shop so my son did a check out with his cheese.  I found the smallest piece of blue cheese that I got for $1.27.  I got the ricotta cheese for $1.99 which I figured was a good deal for me to make lasagna.  If I get it all made then I am going to have some lasagna soon!!  My husband also needed vitamins so those ended up being $1.79 after store coupon and manufacturers coupon.  The flour was on sale for $0.99 for 5 lbs.  We grabbed two more Cran Grape for my husband and Macaroni and Cheese for my son.

I got three Cinnamon Toast Crunch and two Honey Nut Cheerios.  Under advice from my 6 year old, we got 8 boxes of granola bars because they go very quickly because he likes them.

My son was sick so I went to the store and grabbed some medicine.   Got lots of coupons and deals so it was not a high ticket that it would normally be.

My husband took my son to the store to get doughnuts and they brought them home to enjoy.

My husband went to the store to get milk and also got two bags of chips.  The chips are already gone and this is an old picture that I took since I didn't take any pictures when my husband came home (oops!!!).

Harris Teeter $48.23

I made a huge trip to the store and was a little disappointed that I spent so much but I got bread flour which was on sale for $1.77 for a 5 lb bag.  This is the season to get those and since I had to have my mom buy be two 25 lb bags at Sam's Club this year, I know that I need to stock up.  I think that I have 6 bags now and what is left of the last 5 lb bag my mom got.  

We really needed lunchmeat which I might have over bought because my husband took two weeks off around the holidays.  We were also almost totally out of margarine and my husband has declared that Aldi brand changed too much and he dislikes it so I splurged and bought the brand we used to use.  I grabbed Miracle Whip because we didn't move any with us and my husband likes it on turkey sandwiches after the holidays.  I grabbed the 18 packs of eggs because they were on special and we were almost totally out of eggs with my recent splurge of baking sugar cookies.  My husband is a little addicted to this new sugar cookie recipe so I have been making double batches.  I was also at the bottom of the shortening container and needed to refill the Fry Daddy so I figured that $2.87 was close to what I pay at Aldi and it wasn't worth another trip to another store.

My son really needed popcorn because I thought we used the last bag from Aldi (but I found one more in the freezer).  My son has also used all the tissues in the house and my car so I had to buy another box of tissues which I think is mostly all gone now too!

I splurged and bought the toilet paper because we were running low and it always seems to go a lot faster when we have company over the holidays.  I also grabbed three boxes of cereal for way more then I would normally pay and I can't really tell you why but they were a decent deal around $1 per box but we could have done without.  I also grabbed the Crisco butter sticks because I had a coupon and they were on sale.  It is so much easier to bake with them and they were $0.75 each after coupon (don't know if it was a good deal but at least it was easy to make the last batch of cookies).  Seriously thought that I was almost out of honey mustard (which I like on my chicken fingers) and I got them for $0.50 each.  I got home and went to put them in the cupboard and there was one of my favorite brand still in there.  I obviously was doing a lot of impulse shopping with not list and no direction.  I also grabbed two vanilla because it was on sale and I had a coupon (I said that I wouldn't do that and I would start making it because I use so much but of well).

There were two things on my list to get and they were both free!  Free cinnamon hard candy and I used a rain check to get free chocolate because the shelf was fully stocked.  I also got the instant potato packets which I use in my baked potato soup to thicken it (YUM) for free after sale, coupon and electronic coupon.

Last but not least, my mom got addicted to this holiday Celestial Seasonings (which I picked up two years ago free after sale and double coupon) so I bought her these for Christmas which I ended up spending $4.50 for $9 worth of tea....plus it was a thoughtful gift.  Still hoping to catch it when they put it on clearance and get her a bunch more but this is all that I could get since it wasn't the best deal!

Walgreens $17.51

My husband looked online for deals on Coke and found the best deal at Walgreens.  It was 3/$8 which is less than $3 per case.  I had two coupons for $3 off that I "bought" with my coke rewards earlier in the year.  I didn't know how it was going to go because I always have trouble at Walgreens with coupons and deals.  I got the popcorn tin for my dad for Christmas (already wrapped and under the tree).  My husband was totally out of Cran Grape and it was on sale for $1.99 (my buy price).  I got the two off the shelf and asked the sales person if there was anymore in the back.  They said that they would check and he brought three more out.  We took them all...he was a little surprised.

The only good news is that this includes gifts for Christmas which really aren't groceries but I am leaving them in there so that I don't have to separate everything out.  I also used the rest of my free rebate card to get some of the groceries so this means that my real money out of pocket wasn't so high.  I did get a few gift cards for Christmas to Target which I promptly went out and spent.  I still have a few to Trader Joes, Starbucks, Panera, Amazon and a local restaurant chain so those will be well spent to offset the cost of Christmas.  Looking forward to starting to add up the year and seeing where I end overall!!  Hope that the rest of this year goes well for you too!!

Not So Great Month End Report for June

I have been trying my best to keep track of receipts and stay on budget but everything went out the window with the move to the new house.  My budget is $160 for all household products including groceries, cleaners and anything else that I need.  I have been doing okay for the first 5 months of the year as you can see below:

Then June came and we were living in two houses and things were never where we needed them.  I thought that we were eating way too much out but at almost the end of the month, I decided to finally write down my grocery receipts.  Holy Cow!!!  I was over budget and it wasn't even the end of the month (and we were out of toilet paper and lots of food).  I hit the store twice with super doubles to make the money stretch even farther but we didn't stay anywhere near budget this month.

I can't find a picture on this one either but I got chips, cereal, cheese, chicken nuggets, cookies and ice cream sandwiches.  My son said that it would be really nice to have ice cream sandwiches at the new house for a special treat so I grabbed a few other things and stocked up. (no picture)

I went to the new Wegmans because they sent me coupons.  I went some crazy way that my GPS told me to go and I ended up right next to one of the libraries so I knew where I was!!   I will make sure to plan my next trip to this new store when I am going to the library and I will be all set!

I had a coupon for $1 off frozen food so I grabbed the ice cream sandwiches which were wonderful.  I also had a ibotta deal for $0.20 off pasta and we needed some so I grabbed a box of the Wegman's brand which was $1.  The other things were purely stocking up because we didn't have any food and I got to use my $3 off $15 purchase coupon (easily).  I should have only gotten one meat because I realized when I got to the car that I had a second set of coupons!  The benefit of having two houses was getting two sets of coupons.

I grabbed a bunch of things we were out of like milk, brown sugar, and parsley.  I also refilled the wheat crackers, nilla cookies and fruit snacks that are good snacks.

I went to super doubles and got to do a little shopping before going home for dinner.  My mom paid $14.14 because most of things that cost money were hers (yogurt, eye drops, and strawberries) and I was picking up a ton of overages to pay for most of my groceries so my total would have only been around $2.  I even went to the customer service desk because one of my coupons didn't scan so they gave me $2.09 back to my credit card.  Funny that they asked for a credit card and didn't give cash since my mom paid in cash but whatever!

I went a little crazy especially knowing that I was already over budget for the month but I spent my son's entire time in summer camp at the grocery store trying to make the most of the end of super doubles.  I ended up saving $104.23 with sales and coupons on the whole order.  I got some clearance sausage for under $1 per package which is crazy good since it is close to $5 normally.  I got some clearance lunch meat which was on sale for $3.99 for free after meat coupon and peelie on the package.  I also grabbed some free Tabasco, Apple and Eve juice boxes, and Melt Buttery Spread. My favorite purchase was the chicken fingers that we love which ended up being $1 for the package which we ate for dinner that night.

I would love to blame it on one bad decision or another but I purchased a lot this month and I was not doing so great with the couponing so there was a lot of make up for with the last 6 months basically not getting the things that we normally do.  I know that I bought a ton of junk food that I normally don't because I am busy making things in the kitchen like breakfast food and treats and we got doughnuts at the store instead a lot!!  I think that $67 over budget isn't super bad considering everything (of course that doesn't count any money spent on take out or restaurants)!  Can't really blame it all on my husband (also known as doughnuts and soda).  Here is hoping that the move is mostly behind us and I won't have to go crazy with so many other things that I can't take the time to do my grocery shopping anymore!  I almost have my kitchen set up so that should help except for a few boxes that I can't find yet, I think that I will be able to get back to cooking...at least as much as the summer schedule allows.
