May Reading Completed

Another month started and I am looking for some good books to read!  I started with a Spenser book and moved on to a Debbie Macomber book and spent the month going back and forth between the two.  I had a busy month and didn't get a lot of reading in or so I thought until I got to the end of the month and saw how much I had read.  Although not as much as I have been reading, it still seemed like a good amount.  Check the bottom of the post for all the books read year to date.

I hope that you checked out a few of these books.  If you missed the initial review, click on the title of the book and it will link you to the review.  I have really enjoyed finding some new books and new authors along my path and would love any suggestions you have to add some more :)

Thrifty Thursday: Uses for Vinegar

I use vinegar for more uses every day!!  I am truly amazed when I think about all the things that I do with vinegar, especially since I never used to use or buy it.  Now I use about a jug a month!  Do you use vinegar at your house??  I would love to hear what you use it for so make sure you leave a note so that I can try out your family tricks too.

1.  Use in washing machine:

I use white vinegar in washing machine to take the smells from clothes.  I don't know if any one out there has stinky kids (or husband) and need to make sure that clothes come out smelling clean with out using chemicals or fabric softener to cover the smells.  It works great!

2.  Salad dressing and marinades:

I made salad dressing for the first time in a long time from scratch.  It was amazing!!!  Check out the recipe here!

3.  Cleaning, Cleaning and more cleaning:

I cleaned my humidifier to put it away for the winter.  The vinegar helps take away the water scale build up.  We did it during the year but we took the toothbrush to it and cleaned it all up to pack away.  Then, I poured the vinegar in a bag and soaked my shower head in it to take away the water scale build up.  I took it out and used the vinegar to clean the shower.  It helped clean off a lot of things that I couldn't get off with the normal cleaner.  Then, I had to clean out the sponges that I used so I cleaned the sink at the same time.  Lastly, I poured a little in the toilet and scrubbed a little to remove the yuck.  Now, I have lots more clean things with just one little bottle of vinegar and I have a little left to keep going!!

4. Sour Milk Substitute:

If you put a little vinegar in milk, it sours the milk so that you can use it in recipes requiring sour milk or even buttermilk if it works with your recipe.  My grandmothers chocolate cake recipe calls for sour milk and if I don't have any, this is what I do!!

5. Dishwasher Rinse Agent:

I use Jet Dry or Cascade Rinse agent in my dishwasher when I have gotten it nearly free but if not it is horribly expensive.  When I run out, I put vinegar in my dishwasher and makes a big difference.  Things are more dry and less spotty so I will continue to add the vinegar to the dishwasher.

There are tons of blogs and websites out there with helpful hints on the vinegar uses like Readers Digest or Vinegartips.com which give you more uses than I could ever think of to use vinegar for.  I can't wait to find some more uses and add them to my list of what I personally do with vinegar!!

Kid Science: A color of his own

A Color of His Own by Leo Lionni was read at a story time that we went to at the library.  It really struck my son as a great book.  I actually don't know if it was the book or the felt board the librarian made.

Parrots are green
Goldfish is red
Elephant are gray
pigs are pink.
All animals have a color of their own
except for chameleons.
They change color wherever they go.

This book is a great lesson in colors and animals.  It gives a lesson in how chameleons change color with the thing that they are sitting on.

Depending on your child's age and learning level, you can do different things to make the learning go a little farther.  The first and fun thing that we do all the time if change the color and see if they catch you.  My son always catches me and calls me a silly mommy!  After you have read it a few times, leave out a word and have them fill it in.  These are two great and easy tricks to make sure that kids are really listening to the book and reading.

But with this book, there are a few other fun things that you can do.

1.  Make a sponge painting:

The pictures inside the book are sort of like a sponge painting so you can make pictures just like in the book.  I would suggest drawing or printing a picture of the chameleon and painting it any color the kids want.

2.  Make a picture with colored paper:

Cut out the chameleons and make a background that isn't in the book.  Think about another background that the chameleons could put themselves in front of to change to a fun and different pattern like the red with white polka dots on the last page.  Some examples include a blue sky with stars or clouds.

3.  Use tissue paper to make a picture:

Make a tissue paper stained glass picture or make squares with the tissue paper and stick on the chameleon with glue so that it makes a textured picture that is rainbow colors.

4.  Make felt board or colored paper cut outs:

You can make a felt board with the chameleons, leaves, and other items so that the kids can make the matches and play with the book.

There are so many things that you can do to work reading books into everyday activities.  I would love to go to a nature center or zoo and see chameleons so that we could see the real thing in addition to all of the reading and crafts but I don't know where there are any chameleons to visit.  Do you have any other ideas that you might use?  I hope that you check this book if you haven't already!!

Hundred Dollar Baby Book Review

Hundred-Dollar Baby (Spenser) by Robert B. Parker was the next in my pile, book #34 in the Spenser series.  I can't believe how quickly I can read through a pile of books.  I put a few more on reserve at the library and hope for a fast response on them coming in because I only have one more book after reading this one!!  Lucky for me that I have a bookcase of backup books waiting to be read :)
In this book, Spenser is hired by April Kyle (someone from a previous book) to protect her whorehouse in Boston from some thugs that have come in to intimidate the customers.  Spenser was fired after doing such a good job and uncovering some of the truths that April was trying to hide.  It was a good book because it followed through with a character that I previously remember and there were a lot of surprises.  Of course, during the investigation people were murdered and beaten up.  Bad things happened and Spenser continued to work on the case even though he was fired because he always does that.  He uncovered the truth and dealt with it and the book promptly ended.  There is usually a little more after the resolution in the book but it was perfect because it was a little more drawn out then in other books so it was the perfect length and resolution!!

I love all of the Robert Parker books so I might not be the best judge of his books.  I love the Jesse Stone ones the most but I think that it is based on the fact that they are made into TV movies with Tom Selleck.  I picture him in all of the books when I am reading so I might be a little biased.  I also loved the Sunny Randall series because the woman is the lead detective and I thought that it was really neat to see how she dealt with the difficulty of being a women in a man's business.  But I have a special place for the Spenser books because there are so many in the series so I feel like I have known the characters forever!  I can't wait to read the next one but only 4 more left! I hope that you pick one up and see what I am raving about!

Menu Plan Monday 6/3

Monday- Teriyaki Chicken with simple fried rice
Tuesday- Roast Beef Sandwiches on homemade rolls
Wednesday- Spiedie chicken with white rice
Thursday- Salsa Sloppy Joes (make double to freeze)
Friday- Frozen Pizza
Saturday- Leftovers and Fried Rice/Chicken Paninis
Sunday- Omaha Burger and BLT/???

I started planning out June and we were going to be having grilled chicken at least three days a week so I tried to mix it up a little so the fun of grilling wouldn't loose it's thrill but our freezer is filled with chicken marinated to grill.  With taking Spaghetti and meatballs out of the rotation because I am never interested in that in the summer, I don't have a lot of filler meals.  I am going to mix it up and see what I can do over the coming weeks to change the monthly plan just a little so that we aren't eating grilled chicken at every month.

Weekly Goals 6/2

An exhausting week for me ending in a trip to my college alumni weekend.  We always enjoy a trip to the relaxing Eastern Shore of Maryland but it seems like there is just as much preparation needed as a vacation with so much less time.  We hope to have a good week next week (trying to hold out again the heat as much as possible).  I know that we are going to have at least one afternoon at a park but I still don't know when yet because we have to look at the weather.  Three hours in the park on Friday was more heat and humidity then I could take.  I think that I have to build up a tolerance to it and I am just not there yet this year.  Here is hoping that you are having a little cooler weather where you are!!

This Week:

Family Goals
  • Spend time with family- We had a super busy week and I had to have my husband come home from work twice because the air conditioning and I had PT that my little guy was going to go to but he fell asleep.  It is a life saver to have him so close and have a flexible schedule because keeping my little man cooped up in the house is a bad plan for everyone!
  • Air conditioning installation- Yeah!  Super glad that it isn't 80 degrees inside the house now.
  • Meet friends at the park for a picnic- I like to work something for little man into the plans everyday so I decided to go to the library near PT and then head over to PT and finish with a picnic and playtime in the park near PT.  That was my little guy has something on both sides of my appointment to keep him entertained.  We had a great time and were super glad that our friends could meet up with us after school for them!!
  • Playdate at friends houseWe went to a playdate at a friends house and then went to the park.  The boys had a blast.
  • Storytime at Barnes and Noble- The storytimes at Barnes and Noble aren't as put together as the library ones but my son looks forward to them because there is a Thomas train table to play with before and after storytime and they do crafts.  We had a coloring page and made a flag this time.
  • My Gym and 2-3 free plays- We tried to make it to three free plays this week but the little man fell asleep in the car on the way to the second one.  It is always a hard time frame for him to get into going but when he woke up he was really sad that he missed it.  Daddy promised a free play on Monday or Tuesday night next week so he is really looking forward to showing Daddy around my gym because he has never been.
Personal Goals
  • Cut coupons- I cut all my coupons, sorted my printed coupons and got rid of expired coupons before the end of the three day weekend.  I was super happy to get them all done and cleaned up but I still wasn't totally ready for the super double start.  I was glad that I got at least a little organized :)
  • Get coupons on Friday- I planned on the library on Friday so that I would be there to get the paper.  I almost missed last Friday because it seems that the whole week is a blur anymore!!  I didn't get the papers the first time that we were there because it was so rushed but we went back after PT and got all of them!
  • Go to PT for TMJ twice- I had been really sore and she worked me out good at my first appointment so I spent a lot of time with ice on my face that night but luckily woke up feeling better the next day.  The thing with 2 times a week is that you don't have a lot of recovery time but it all worked out well!
  • Shut off computer 6 nights to save energy- I was super tired and went to bed early on Wednesday and forgot to shut off the computer.  Other than that, I remembered for the rest of the week!
  • Finish reading Blogging for Books book- Read and review is posted.
  • Read next Spenser book and started on the next Debbie Macomber book :)
  • Read more books about science and math to figure out some summer plans- I started reading one book but I realized that I needed to take so many notes that I needed to do it when I could sit at the computer at the same time and type up the ideas or I would just forget them by the end of the book.
Home Management Goals
  • Clean dishes, counters and floors at least 5 days of the week- I have tried to clean the kitchen all week.  It got much easier after we got the air conditioner replaced because it was so humid and hard to get things done before!  Glad we are back in the land of the cool!!
  • Clean dishes one night and not wait until the morning- Umm, I cleaned up most nights and ran the dishwasher when needed but I didn't clean the counters to totally clean until Thursday night.  It is a good reason after a hard week why we have any easy meal.  It was just a few dishes and we ate a little earlier then we had been so that there was time
Blog Goals

  • Post one post everyday (schedule 7 posts so that can spend more time with family)- I posted a lot over the three day weekend to get ready for the week.  I had it all scheduled mostly ahead of time and got the rest up before it was time.
  • Review book reviews completed during the week (if done)- Done
  • Work on a few posts to work ahead for the coming week- I posted all of the Menu Plans for the month and a few Thrifty Thursdays so that I have a little more posted for the rest of June.  I am hoping to get a few more posts up each night to get more of the framework for the month set but we have been a little busy.
  • Post Weekly Goals, Menu Plan Monday, and Thrifty Thursday Tip- Done

    May Budget Review

My first purchase of the month was a total necessary one :)  I only spent $0.04 (saving $2.38) and I got my green bag tag $2 ECB back which I used to buy 2 Red Baron Pizzas and a bottle of Tide for $3.19 OOP (saving $20.45)

The great addition to the month is Giant credit and gift cards that I used for the following purchases and one more gallon of milk through the month so I didn't spend any money out of the budget on all of these purchases.  Total savings with online community credit + discount savings + coupons + gift cards= $32.43 savings

I had a trip to Target to get yeast because it is way cheaper at Target then Safeway, Giant or Harris Teeter (I know because I checked all of them).  Three jars were $11.02 after coupons.

Then, I went to Walmart to get seeds and spent $3.15.  I went a little overboard with all of the seeds but who can beat the pricing of $0.50 per pack!!!  I would have spent this much on one pot of basil...sadly, I would have already had basil though!!  I am trying to be patient!

By the middle of the month, I had a very low total OOP of $27.05 by the 15th.  I was pretty excited because that included two trips with my son where he picked out some treats at each store (not pictured) but my total was still super low leaving me the rest of the month to figure out what else I needed to get.

Then, my parents came to visit!  This is usually not great on the budget because they encourage more shopping and more spending as well as needing the extra food to feed more people but they greatly helped out the budget by buying a bunch of things at Target and Aldi's for us!!  My mom also took my husband and son shoe shopping at Kohl's and picked up the tab for all of those purchases.  We also took the time while they were here to plant some of our seeds to grow some interesting food indoors.  So nothing out of pocket and we made out of ahead on all the stuff that they bought.  I only spent $4.00 OOP at Aldi's when we were trying to come up exact change.  Grandma savings $81.75 (aproximate money my mother spent getting everything that my son pointed at).

I decided to go and get some deals at Harris Teeter and spent $8.49 (saving $24.71).

I only had two weeks left in the month and very little on the list that had to be purchased.  I am sure that there are other things that I could get but nothing that we desperately needed except olive oil.  Can you believe that we were out?  Good news was it was on sale at CVS so I bought two for a total of $6.18 OOP (saving $14.00).

Then, we needed some milk and they had it at Harris Teeter for an evic special but I might have gone a little crazy.  There were a lot of deals to be had including free Fiber One bars and Toaster Strudels from evic coupons.  Plus new coupons out to make the sugar super cheap and the salt, soy sauce, and frosting flavors free!!!  I grabbed a bag of bananas that were clearanced for $0.25 per pound so for $0.92, I got enough to make three loaves of banana bread!  I am going to freeze and make them when we are ready for some bread (and have some air conditioning).

I actually did two trips to get the below items which were a total of $11.82 OOP (saving $67.99).  I got a lot of things on these trips but I went a little overboard because I knew how little that I spent so far for the month and it was almost over.

Of course, while I was preparing for this trip, I saw a rumor that Harris Teeter was having Super Doubles starting on 5/29!!  Really three days of month left and I am going to blow it on whatever deals are out there for Super Doubles!!  Well, the good news is that I only spent $57.54 in the first 4 weeks in the month!!  Leaving lots leftover to go wild and crazy at the Super Double event.

Decided on one more pre-super double trip to Harris Teeter to stock up on Cheese Its because I found the other computer and printed more coupons and I "bought" the coupon on the Kellogg's Family Rewards site.  I also "bought" the Lipton coupon on Recycle bank so that I could get the tea bags.  I broke out my first check out into two so that I wouldn't have an issue with the evic specials and the zvr coupons (because I always do and if the check out is too big, then I don't see it) and then realized that there was a sale on Ocean Spray Cranberry Juice which we were already running low on so I went through the line again and got a few Ocean Spray and a few more Cheese Its (because more Cheese Its never hurt anyone, except my budget).  Total OOP $22.15 (total savings $59.94) pictured below.

After all that shopping, I did some Super Double madness!!  I got all this stuff and a little more below in the last three days of the month to finish off a little higher on the budget then I wanted to be but how can you turn down those deals!!!

    Total Monthly OOP $124.08
Total Montly Savings $498.60 (including Giant savings and gift cards)
    80.1% Monthly Savings

This is a great amount of savings over the first five months of the year:

    Year To Date Spending $743.62
    Year To Date Savings     $2276.61

The Average Monthly OOP is $148.72 which is below my budget of $160 per month.

    75.4% Total Savings YTD
