I was looking at some of my posts from last month and I saw that I did the Top 10 viewed recipes.  I went through the list and found that many of the recipes had big jumps in the numbers and a few others.  I thought that it was a great idea to see which other recipes had huge jumps and were now up over 100 views.

Here is an updated list of all of the Top Viewed recipes on my blog.  If you haven't checked them out, you really should!!!  Especially the Easy Baked Potato Soup which is a great recipe as the weather is getting colder.  YUM!!  Our weekly regular loaf of bread is the sandwich bread recipe below (also great with some baked potato soup).  These are some of our family favorites so I hope that you try a few recipes that look good to you!

September Cooking Review

I made a lot of things this month but almost all of them were the same old recipes but I tried a few new ones!!  I think that our favorite of the month was the Chocolate Chip Blondies and Hershey's Chocolate Chip cookie bars.  I was looking for the new family favorite recipe and we loved them all even though they were all just a little different.  I think that they might all have their place and be made again.

The sticky cinnamon rolls have become a tradition here on Friday night and Saturday morning recently.  After we have our Friday pizza, I turn the leftover pizza dough into cinnamon rolls which are enjoyed for dessert that night and another pan for breakfast the next day.  They are super tasty and no frosting needed!!  I call that added healthy because less sugar right?  Okay, that is what I am going with but I could take a fork and eat the whole pan myself.

I hope that you had a tasty month.  If you missed any of my recipes, please click on the link with the title and it will bring you back to the original post and recipe.  I hope that you try a few and see what your family likes best!!

Chewy Chocolate Chip Blondies with M&Ms

This was my second chocolate chip cookie bar that I tested out and this was one of our favorites. If you would like to check out my first ones here and my third ones here, feel free to see how they are all totally different and yummy!  I found this recipe on A Pumpkin and A Princess blog which has a lot of great recipes including this one!!  Make sure you check out her recipe because she did it a little differently but I didn't have any mini M&Ms so I went with something that was close to my last chocolate chip bar with M&Ms.

The first step was to melt the butter.  Normally I would use another bowl and melt it and pour it into the bigger mixing bowl but I decided since there was nothing to cream that I would stir it by hand.  I put the butter in the dish and put the whole thing in the microwave.  It helps because then nothing splashes out of the bowl.

Then, I added the brown sugar which incorporated easily.  This is where you would add the vanilla but I was out of it so I just skipped it.

After stirring all those together, I added the egg.  After stirring it in, it looked mostly the same as the first picture so glad I took a picture with an egg in it or you might not have believed me.

Time to add the dry ingredients.

Mix all of the dry ingredients together.  I used a fork but feel free to use what you want to...my mom always uses a rubber spatula but I just like the fork.  The ingredients come together into a thick batter.

Then, add 1/2 cup of chocolate chips to the batter and mix them in.

Grease 8 x 8 or 9 x 9 pan and spread in the batter so that it reaches the corners.  Top with 1/2 cup of M&Ms or chocolate chips. Press them in a little so that stay in the batter.

Bake the bars and then you get a nicely browned pan that raises a lot at the sides.

After our taste test, my husband and I agreed that there was too much chocolate on it and I would make it without the M&Ms on the top next time.  I know it sounds crazy that there could ever be too much chocolate but the flavor of the blondie was really good and all of the chocolate covered up the rich buttery goodness of the flavor.  But the nice crispy top with the chewy center was amazing!!

Here is the recipe in case you want to make your own and here is a slice so that you can have your own!! If you want to check out the original recipe, look here to see how A Pumpkin and A Princess makes her blondies.  Anyway you make them, just make sure you make them!!!

Thrifty Thursday: Pumpkin Muffin with strudel topping

I was thinking a lot about this weeks Thrifty Thursday post and I decided to go with the season.  Do you know how much it costs to get a fancy muffin at Starbucks or other cupcake places?  I do and they are $3-$4 each.  I can't imagine spending that on one breakfast or snacks.

Normally, the muffins and bread that I make are simple and kind of basic....mostly because my son and husband prefer them that way but also because it is easier.  I had some oat packets leftover from the top of the yogurt containers that my mom and mother in law ate without the oats.  I decided to make two special muffins just for me.  See how the rest of the pan is the normal muffin??

Since I was only making two, I decided to make the strudel on top of the muffin batter.  I put a few little pieces of butter, oats, and brown sugar.  After I ate them and told my husband how much I liked them, he asked where they were so that he could try them....umm, I ate the only two that I made.  Next batch, I decided to take pictures and make a whole batch with the oats that I had left.

It cooked up really nicely and I had a special muffin for breakfast (the first time and for many other breakfasts after that).  My parents came and finished off the last one left!!  I hope that you try this for your own muffins soon.

Here is my pumpkin bread and muffin recipe if you want to try it yourself!!  You can also try it with any of your favorite breads and muffins.  Let me know how it works out.  If you want to add the strudel topping, mix up what sounds good to you but here is what I added, putting it as needed on each muffin top before baking.

Oat Strudel Topping

  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • Oats or Quick Oats
  • 2 tablespoon butter or margarine

    Kid Reading: Ish

Ish (Creatrilogy) by Peter Reynolds was a great book that I picked up at the library.  I had it on the list of books that I wanted to read but I really didn't know anything about it.  I figured that picking it up at the library would be good to see if my son liked it.

The book had the main character Ramon who loved to draw- anytime, anything, and anywhere.  Leon, Ramon's brother, made fun of his drawing and Ramon crumpled up the drawing and threw it.  Ramon had trouble drawing after that because he just kept hearing Leon's laughter.  After months of trying, Ramon stops drawing.  His sister, Marisol, picked up one of Ramon's crumpled pictures and ran to her room.  He was going to yell at her but he looked at her walls and she had hung up lots of his drawing all over the room.  She points to her favorite drawing.  Ramon says that it was supposed to be a vase with flowers but bit doesn't look like one (it was the one that his brother made fun of).  The sister says that it looks vase-ISH.  They decide that they do look ish and Ramon was ready to draw again.  He made pictures of things around him and feelings.  He started ish writing to make something that was poem-ish.  Ramon was very happy and lived ishfully ever after.

If you have a perfectionist, this is the perfect book for you.  When my son was first writing letters, he would get really upset if they weren't perfect and then wanted to stop.  I wish that I knew about this book back then because it would have been really helpful.  It is always great to teach kids to practice and have fun.  Read the book and do something with your child that they might not do perfectly.  Also, I think that drawing emotions is an interesting one and I am not sure that all ages could do this but it seems like a great follow up activity.  Pick something that appeals to your kids and see where the ish takes you!!!

    Forever Friday Book Review

Forever Friday: A Novel by Timothy Lewis was a book that I got through Blogging for Books.  I picked it out of the choices available and actually forgot about it before it showed up on my doorstep so I didn't know exactly what I had picked but I was excited when I got it.  I had a bunch of books that I needed to read from the library before they were due so when I finished them, I stopped checking out books from the library until I started this book.  Boy am I glad that I did!!

The book started with Adam Colby in the summer of 2006 while he was doing an estate sale for Gabe and Pearl (Huck) Alexander's home after their death.  Adam found a photo album of old post cards and was instantly hooked.  He say this as the answer to learn what kept the love alive for this couple for so many years when his own marriage just ended.  Through investigating, Adam has met and gotten to know Yevette, the daughter of the Alexander's house keeper, and built a good friendship.

My favorite part of the book is the first time meeting of Huck and Gabe at the market.  Huck went to get some seafood and Gabe saw her from his office and went running down to help her.  Their brief encounter left them both thinking about each other for weeks to come.  The feeling had Huck avoiding the market so that she wouldn't be tempted by someone who was not her finance.  Gabe, on the other hand, was interested in making her his future bride.  With their second encounter, they followed it up with a date all day and not arriving home until 3 am to find her finance sitting on the stairs of her boarding house.  The true colors of her finance were shown and a fight ensued.

There are so many heart racing adventures in this love story that you will have to pick it up to find out what happens between the happy couple and everyone that knows them.  This book was filled with great writing and even better characters.  There wasn't a slow part in the plot because of all of the adventures as well as reading the post cards ever Friday until Gabe's passing.  It is a great love story to make you really appreciate the relationships that you have now.

If you would like to learn more about the author, you should check out his website here.  It gives more information about the book and a link to buy it.  There is even an except of the book if you want to check it out and not take my word for it (or click here for a direct link).  I hope that you check out the excerpt and see how great the writing is so that you pick up the book soon!!

I had a hard time getting into the book at the beginning because I didn't have enough time to sit down and read enough to get to know the characters.  The most confusing part of the book is that it is about the whole life of the main characters including after their death so it goes back and forth to give you the details of their life and if you don't pay attention Huck and Gabe change ages and stages and I started to get a little confused.  Once I sat down and payed attention, I didn't want to stop because it was a riveting story.  I highly recommend taking the time to get into the book before putting it down (so don't start it as you are falling asleep like I did).  I think that you should check out the book and see if you don't fall in love with this love story!!

*I did receive a free advanced copy of this book for my honest review of this book through Blogging for Books at WaterBrook Mulnomah Publishing.  I posted my review on NOVA Frugal Family, on Amazon and Good Reads.  If you would like to see one at the other sites, click on the name and it will take you directly to my review.

    September Reading Completed

I had another month of great reading.  Did you??  I hope so because the weather is starting to get colder and it is the perfect time of year to curl up with a good book and read!!  At least it is another excuse, although I need to stop reading and get some sleep and things done around the house.

I started off the month with a book in my hand and was straight on to the next.  I had trouble putting them down!  Luckily, I got a lot of reading time over the three day weekend and then the month was off to a quick start.  It was hard to get anything done with all my reading but I still went on to grab another book.  I was planning on trying to read a few books off my shelf at home but I couldn't help myself from the books at the library again!  I might have read two books from start to finish instead of going to sleep this month but I am not pointing any fingers.

If you are interested in seeing my review of each book, click on the title and it will take you to the original post so you can see my summary and review.  I hope that you check out a few new books or authors this month!  Let me know if there are any books that I need to add to next month's list!!

There were a bunch of books that I wanted to read and I got a lot of them checked off my list.  Now I get to start thinking about next month!!   I have been updating my Good Reads account with all my books read and trying to update my master list on the blog.  I would link up to my Good Reads account but I am still learning the technology to do that so feel free to find me there if you have an account and you can see a more updated view but here is my yearly  total!  I can't believe how past my goal I am since I was hoping for 45-50 books.  There are only a few more months left in the year to finish my list so I might have to stop going off in tangents of other authors and save those for next year!!
