Kid Wednesday: S for Snow

It was S week at school so we started on a lot of S for Snow activities and then school was snowed out.  We rescheduled S for Snow for the next week and we were mostly snowed out of school.  We got lots of snow activities done at home because of S week and all the SNOW!!!

We did some snowflake puzzles from the Snowflake Pack from Life is Peachy which I cut up ahead of time and he put together.  I thought that we would be doing them more then once through the week because he usually likes to pull those out again so we didn't glue them on to a paper.  We only actually did them once because there were so many other activities in the pile (and we did them again when it snowed the next week).  Check out this printable here.

Then, we made a snowflake book with numbers (from the same site).  My son loves putting anything into a book so I am glad that he gets a chance to practice writing his numbers at the same time.  He wrote the numbers on each sheet and later cut them out and then we stapled them together with his little stapler.

We did dot marker activities with the S which is always a favorite but goes way too quickly and since the markers are out, we have to do other dot marker activities.  Check out these printables from 3 Dinosaurs. This is from snowlearning 1 or winterpart 3 pack with a lot of other fun printables that we didn't use like trace the snowflake.  You can find all of the snow learning  packets here or here.

We did the rolling dice game which he (and one of his friends loves).  I am not sure why this keeps them entertained for so long but my son did three different charts with the graphing of how many times he rolled different pictures.  The best part is that they get to cut out the die and help tape it together so the task and length of activities is not just rolling and dotting. This one is found in snowlearning 3.

Here is the chart where he tried to see who could get the most and who would come in second place.  He switched colors when the first picture won so that he would know who got the dots in the second round.

We did an S and he wrote the number of dots that were on the S and counted out how many beads he needed to put over the dots.  There was also the word to trace at the bottom of the page with the picture of the snowflake.  This was fun and took a few steps to increase the action to detail.  This is in snowlearning tot.

We did a simple counting puzzle with the higher numbers.  I cut up all of the sheets and then he put them in order and glued them on the paper.  This is from winterpart1 from 3 Dinosaurs.

Since he liked that so much, we made a snow puzzle that in order put it in correct order he had to do some addition.  We decided to use the beads and plates to add them.  My son took the math problems that he knew and finished them.  He moved the ones that he needed to work out to the other side to use the beads.  We did this in two different times but he was super excited to put them in order and glue the final puzzle.

We did it on blue paper and he loved the final puzzle and it was worth all the math work to get it right.  He thought it was funny that the final numbers counted by two when they were put in order too!  This is from winterpart1 from 3 Dinosaurs.

We did more math with coloring which my son really liked.  There were a few different kinds all in winterpart 3 (found here).

We did some math where you had to make matches which are also found in the packs from 3 Dinosaurs.

We did some more complicated ones where you had to do the math and both sides.  One of the numbers didn't match...oops!

We did a design a snowman that my son enjoyed the cutting and the gluing.  He picked out the hat and tie after rearranging it a few times with lips and a mustache as his other favorite options that didn't make it into the final snowman.  I found it through Pinterest and you can find it here.

We also made a snowman out of cotton balls which he had to pull apart and glue.  This took two times of sitting down to finish the cotton and then to decorate.  At first, I thought we were going to fill in the whole snowman with cotton balls but after doing around the outside, we decided that he needed eyes and buttons so we decorated after it was totally dry.

At school, they read Mister Seahorse by Eric Carle and used water colors to paint a seahorse to go with it just like the picture on the cover.  It was great because the kids picked out the colors and stayed within the lines but made a different picture for each one in the class.

Here is my son's watercolor.

They also read a book about skeletons and made a skeleton from dog biscuits.

They also painted an S shaped snake and then they cut it out which practiced their patience and ability to cut a huge paper to make their final product.  It was a really S filled week with lots of fun S activities including his snowman place mat.

On the first snow day, he cheered because that meant that he got to do more block painting which he got for his birthday.  I bought two sets and he is enjoying painting them so we will be doing a few more some afternoon after school to finish the blocks in the first kit.  The great thing is that we can cut up some wood from the basement and make more if he finishes all of the ones from the kits.  It is a super easy and frugal craft to do with scrap wood.  Then the kids have something fun to play with afterwards!

I hope that you have some great ideas for S week and all of the fun things that you can do with your kids but if you want to add a little sun into a snowy week, make sure you do a sun activity too!

I would love to give credit and help you find this but this was one that my son did at school so I don't know where they got it.  It is nice because it has letters and coloring so I am going to go on a search to find it.  Let me know if you find it first!  Now we need to find the real sun and stop with all of the snow that we are getting here in Northern Virginia!!!
