I didn't know much about this book when I picked it from Blogging for Books but I knew that I read the previous book (review here) by the author and she was a great writer. I was really looking forward to her next book even though I didn't know what it was about. I got it as soon as it was available and waited for it to come. A
Stillness of Chimes: A Novel by Meg Moseley was on my list of books that I was excited to read when it came out even though I had no idea what it was about and I wasn't disappointed!
Laura Gantt came home to deal with her mother's funeral and all of her families possessions after her mothers unexpected passing. When she arrives home, she hears rumors that her long ago drowned and presumed dead father was still alive and wandering around town. She is having a hard time dealing with the fact that she has no family left so holds on to the unlikely possibility that her father is still alive. During this trip home, she reconnects with her childhood best friend and boyfriend, Sean Holloran, who helps to protect her against his father and a mysterious intruder. In order to find out all of the twists and turns, you have to read it yourself.
This was a great book about dealing with family tragedy and growing stronger. There is a lot of interesting twists and turns through the book that show you the friendships and bonds that even though life long friends haven't been together in a very long time, they are strong and supportive. The friends that Laura has in the book stand with her through the amazing things that are uncovered in her mother's journals and possessions. I love Meg Moseley's writing because it really makes you feel like you are in the middle of the character's lives. I felt for all of the characters and learned all about their lives through her great writing. I hope that you check this out at your local bookstore or library.
If you want to find out more about Meg Moseley, please check out her website here. There is more information about her available here with links to each of her books, as well as a few other authors you maybe interested in if you like her work.

I found out about the program through someone else that was blogging
about the book that they just read. Since I have a love of reading and
all things books, it seemed like a nice program to try. If you are
already active with the program, please tell me how you like it. I look
forward to trying out some new books soon.
*Please
note that I was provided a free copy of the book through Waterbrook
Multnomah Publishing Group through their Blogging for Books program for
my honest opinion of the book. My review is also posted on Amazon and the Blogging for Books website.

Menu Plan Monday 3/17
Monday- Herb Butter Roasted Chicken with herb rice or stuffing
Tuesday- Salsa Sloppy Joes with mac and cheese
Wednesday- Pizza Grilled Cheese with homemade pizza dipping sauce
Thursday- Chicken tacos with saffron rice
Friday- Olive Oil Pasta with garlic bread
Saturday- Leftovers/???
Sunday- Leftovers/Homemade Pizza
I worked my magic on another week using things from the pantry and freezer with a lot of yummy meals. My parents leave at the beginning of the week so I moved over to some of our favorite meals as a treat to us. I have no idea what we are going to do on Saturday night but I will make sure that I have something for dinner. There are lots of options but nothing sounding super tasty and I would like to try a new meal. If it happens, I will post the recipe but if not we will be digging something from the freezer. Do you have meals that you make when you aren't in the mood to make anything else? Any family fall back meals? I usually make Olive Oil pasta but that is the night before so we might just end up with leftovers but crossing my fingers that by then I will come up with a new recipe to try.

Weekly Goals 3/16
I think that I might have tried to fit a little too much into the week and might need a week to recover...sadly, I didn't plan an easy week next week either. I worked this week for three days and I don't know how people do this full time because there aren't enough hours in the day. I certainly try to do as much as I can while I have time but I am tired and fighting off a cold now! Here is what I got done this week and what I have posted for next week.
This week:
Family Goals
Family Goals
This week:
Family Goals
Spend time with family with grandparents- We had a fun week with the grandparents here and my son was in heaven with all the attention. He made short work of wrapping them around his little finger and had them taking him wherever he wanted and playing games and reading books all the time. He is going to go into detox next week with only me to entertain him :)Playdate with friends and couponing class- We went to our friends house and while the kids were playing we went over couponing basics. She has already gone to the store and gotten some deals so she is pretty excited.Playdate with friends after school (another mom and I are switching days picking the kids up from school so we get one day with no kids for most of the day and then another where the kids entertain each other so it is the best of both worlds so this should be my free day)- Thankfully, my friend watched the two kids after school so I could get in my last kid free trip to the HT GM promo.Visited my son's school and got to meet the principal
Get coupons on Friday or Saturday- I got all my papers in one stop and I was super happy! Thank goodness for one thing going my way.Cut coupons (three inserts)- I got all my coupons cut before my family came so that I could have them all put away so I was pretty excited with myself since there were three inserts and a busy week. It is so good to get a jump on it over the weekend to start the week off right.Shut off computer 6 nights to save energy- I had my computer off every night and then I shut it off every time I left the house for a long period of time so I saved tons of energy and the computer was actually working well when I turned it on.Set up and fund Roth IRA and meet with financial advisor- So glad that I got this done and crossed off the list.- Jazzercise (one day-hopefully Tuesday before company comes)- Worked instead :( No Jazzercise!
Subbing at school one day- I worked three days this week instead which put a kink in the plan of getting things done. It was super busy with trying to get rid of- Post additional coupons for sale to ebay until I reach my limit
Meet with son's school- We had a meeting with my son's future principal to get a tour of the school. It was nice to set my mind at ease about the education and process that they use at the school so I am crossing my fingers and hoping to learn more through the process.Meet with financial advisor- We had a long meeting with my financial person and I transferred over my 401K from my last job so that everything is all in the same paperwork. I also opened up a Roth IRA. I don't know if I feel better about things but at least I got two things checked off my list.Read next review book- I started the book and started reading but I didn't get it finished. It is a great book and hope to have the review up next week.- Read next movie book- I didn't get to start on this book and it is due at the library soon so I better have more free time to read quickly. Don't know if I am going to start it or just return it and reserve it again to try again when I don't fit too much in.
Clean dishes, counters and floors at least 5 days of the week- I did so much cleaning this week and the kitchen fought back but I got it mostly clean until my parents got here and that always gets out of control quickly with 5 of us in the house.Clean dishes one night and not wait until the morning- I went into the kitchen and did the dishes one night while watching TV and then I did them another night but left one pan soaking until morning. I even ran and emptied the dishwasher one night so that I didn't have to wait until morning to clean up what was left. I did a great job even though there were still way too many dishes.
Post one post everyday (schedule 7 posts so that can spend more time with family)- I got up 6 days and didn't post the Saturday post until way later in the day but still got lots of family time and wish that I did get it done earlier in the week.Review book reviews completed during the week (if done)- Reviews were posted this week but I didn't finish any books this week so there are no new reviews outstanding.- Work on a few posts to work ahead for the coming week - HAHA!! I got nothing done for the week.
Participate in blog hops to share posts with others- I read a bunch of blogs and I am going to do my link ups on Sunday while my parents are away so that I can work in peace but I have done some linkups already this week.Post Sunday Weekly Goals, Menu Plan Monday, Kid Wednesday and Thrifty Thursday Tip- All scheduled and posted for the week.

Late Saturday Post for Harris Teeter trips
So this week and weekend have been so crazy and I had most of my blogging week planned out except that I needed to finish a post for Saturday. I have all week to do it so I should be fine. The rest of the week is all scheduled and only one thing to do should be fine right! Ha!! The week got away from me and I didn't do the post that I was supposed to write so here is my heartfelt apology.
I ended up being called in to sub at my son's school three days last week instead of just the one (and it almost turned into a fourth which luckily someone else did). I was working at the beginning of the week and my friend took my son so I could run to the grocery store in peace and get my last chance at the General Mills promotion and I was super happy with my haul. I worked the next day when I should have been home cleaning up the house because my parents were coming. I cleaned the kitchen like a mad woman on my way out the door and barely making it to work on time. We got home and got a little more cleaning done before my parents arrived but I was a little stressed.
We had a horrible wind storm and the power went out! I took that opportunity while we still have the backup power from the surge protector for the internet to quickly pay the entire months bills which were sitting on the counter because I didn't get to them yet. Yeah to online bill pay because I got them all in before the surge protector was done and the internet went out. Luckily the power came on the next morning so it wasn't a long outage but you never know.
My husband and I went to meet with my son's school principal for next year and get a tour of the school. I was totally stressed about it but the tour was great and she was very nice. We are going to try to go to an open house that they have coming up so that we can see some of the programs that they do through the year. I am glad that my husband and I got to do that together. I went home and did some dishes and cleaned the kitchen again and my mother and I went to pick up my son from school. WHAT?! Where did the morning go!
I worked the next day and then my parents took my son out to lunch and to do some fun adventures in the mall so my husband came home early and we went to meet with a financial planner. I set up my Roth IRA and funded it for 2013. I transferred my 401K from my old job to them and I am going to get a bonus cash deposit for the transfer so good timing. I hope to clean up some of my finances and get all straight for the new year. We went home and fixed dinner and it was already time for bed!
On Saturday morning I went to a consignment sale and grabbed a few fun things. We left there and drove to another consignment sale that one of the people in my mom's group said was amazing. We found 4-5 things and then we tried to get in line. It was a mess. We were in line for awhile and my mom took a bathroom break and then I took a bathroom break and we were rearranged to another section of the store and I figured that we were in for at least one hour waiting. We didn't have anything worth that wait so we left after the women running the line said it would probably be an hour. We went to Target and then had a yummy lunch. We went to KMart and then Aldis and then finally headed home.
We went home and I might have passed out on the couch around 4 pm because I was dead tired after the week (and the day) that I had been through. My family went out and bought pizza while I was still sleeping on the table and my son told me that it was time for dinner so I eventually got up and went to the dinner table.... such a bad example as a mom right? Oh well, it happens.
After dinner, my little man got his bath and my mom and I went to the grocery store to spend our $3.50 GM mills promotion. I got this:
When the cashier rang it up, it was over $57 and I started to worry that I went a little crazy with all of the stuff in the cart and lack of preparation. After sales and coupons, I spent $9.00 at the register. I realized that the evic zvr didn't come off for the Suave lotion so I went to customer service and she gave me $1.54 back in cash. When I got home, I turned in the receipt to get $3 from Checkout 51 and I will get $1 from Saving Star. In addition, I got two catalinas to spend on my next order for $2 and $3. I am starting to think that my $1/2 Kraft Singles didn't come off so I will have to go back tomorrow and see if I can get that resolved or return them because they were on sale for $4.15 and not $3.00 at my store so I was just trying to use my $3.50 credit and went a little crazy with all the purchases because I was exhausted. UGH! Not the best time to shop but I worked with the little time that I had.
My mom got this:
I supplied all of the coupons and saved the evic zvr coupons for her so it worked out really well for her. The Redd's Strawberry Ale is something my mom and husband wanted to try because my sister in law brought over the apple one which was amazing. I think that we all agreed that the apple one was our favorite but you don't know if you don't try. After all of the savings and everything, her total was under $14 and most of that was the Strawberry Ale and her toothpaste which I only had a coupon if she bought two and she only wanted one....luckily I had a evic zvr saved on her card so she did save another $0.75 on the toothpaste.
How did your week go?? My husband is getting new tires on his truck tomorrow and then we have a birthday party to take my son too so tomorrow is still going to be crazy busy!!! I need a little break but I don't think that I have one worked into the near future so going to have to make do. The great news is that I am getting a lot accomplished. Hope you had a great week and my weekly goals will be up tomorrow morning!!

A Long Way Down Book Review
In my quest to finish the list of books that are going to be movies this year, I got the next book on the list, A
Long Way Down by Nick Hornby. I knew nothing about this before I got it and the front cover says that he is the author of High Fidelity, About A Boy and How to Be Good and I know that the first two are movies so he is obviously successful getting his books accepted as movies. That must also mean that his books and movies are popular but I know that I haven't read any of the books before.... I may have seen the movies but I couldn't swear to it either way.
This books starts with Martin, JJ, Jess and Maureen meeting in the strangest way on New Year's Eve and are bonded for life. They all go to the top of a tall building, Toppers' House, in London, England because they want to jump. Martin, television talk show host, has gone through a scandal with a underage girl so he went to jail and lost his wife and children in the process so he is dealing with putting his life back together in the public eye. JJ, a former rock band member, has decided to end his life because his band broke up and his girlfriend left him because he wasn't playing music anymore and he is an American stranded in a dead end job after his life disintegrated. Jess, the teenage daughter of politic father, decided that she was heart broken over the loss of her boyfriend so she was ending her life and pain. Maureen, a single mother to a high disabled son, has decided that her life is not worth living because all she does is care for someone who doesn't care about her. Each character tells their story and how they help each other with the pact to not kill themselves for a period of time and then check back before making their next move. You have to read the book to see all of the situations that they get themselves into through this process.
I am glad that I decided to stretch myself to read some different types of books even if they aren't all my favorites. This one was not one of my favorites. My dad is an English teacher and gave long speeches to me about the differences between a story focusing on the plot and one focusing on character development. This was clearly about character development. I just didn't feel that the characters had any earth shattering changes that made it worth reading. The book was set in London so there was a lot of speech patterns that I just couldn't get past. I don't normally have that problem but there was something distracting and it might be because one of the people was American so it switched back and forth between the way that the different characters were speaking. In addition, there was a lot of swearing/cursing used (I realized that my friends just laughed at me with this strange issue to the book based on my before kid mouth) but I found that bad words were coming out of my mouth more often when reading this book so I don't think that it was a good influence on me :) I hope that you check it out for yourself and let me know what you think. I am sure there are a bunch of people out there that might totally disagree with me but I would give it 2.5 stars out of 5.
Feel free to join me in my quest to read all these books and see if I am interested in seeing the movies!

Thrifty Thursday: Frugal Pantry Essentials
Do you ever get home and realize that you have nothing for dinner? Do you ever look around your kitchen and say, "We don't have any food!" even though there is stuff in the house. It doesn't matter how much time and effort you put into grocery shopping and getting the deals if you can't get dinner on the table. I make a monthly meal plan but everything doesn't always go according to
plan so it is always good to have some pantry essentials in your
cupboards so that you can make a fast and yummy dinner.
1. Pasta- It is the best long term stored item that you can make into an easy and quick dinner. There are so many different types from spaghetti to penne which can be used for different recipes to make it feel like you aren't having the same meal every night. We all like different pasta so everyone gets a turn at having their favorite pasta...sadly, my son gets his turn more often then not with plain spaghetti. Keep some meatballs in the freezer to make a yummy spaghetti and meatballs or go with the Olive Oil Pasta if you don't want the red sauce. If you have some zucchini in the fridge, you might want to check out this amazing recipe for Fried Zucchini Pasta or Lemon Parmesan Pasta. Want to go crazy and use it for something other than an Italian dish, try Spicy Szechuan Noodles or some lo mein dish.
2. Rice- We like white rice much more then brown rice but we keep both. Because brown rice takes so long, I usually make it ahead and freeze in portions that my family will eat. White rice is easy to make up in a pot or to make a simple fried rice with some broth. Change it up a little and make some Mexican Rice to go with tacos. This is one of the most versatile side dishes and we used to eat it almost every night before we had my son but now we have to mix it up to keep him interested in dinner. You can mix in a little tomato sauce and meat and make a quick Spanish rice or Stuffed Peppers.
3. Spaghetti Sauce (and tomato paste)- It can be used to make spaghetti. We also use it to top a pizza or dip other foods in like Not So Fried Zucchini and Cheesy Garlic Pizza Bites. I use tomato paste to thicken the sauce if it is too watery and I also use it in my Salsa Sloppy Joe recipe. It is the base of at least one meal a week in our house.
4. Olive Oil and other oils- I can whip up a great Olive Oil Pasta when we can't figure out anything else for dinner. It takes very few ingredients and they are all in my pantry (and spice cupboard). They are needed for essential ingredients in lots of other cooking and baking and to pan fry anything.
5. Spices- We have a lot of spices in our cupboards of varying usage. The funny thing is that I thought that I used a lot of spices before but now that I am cooking even more from scratch, I go through spices really quickly. I called my mom the other day because she filled my spice jar of paprika when she was visiting last time and I already used it all. I really don't think that it has been too long but it is the main spice in my Rosemary Chicken and Potatoes recipe so I guess doing the containers of those used up most of my stock. I had never used cumin or thyme before and I use them a lot more now and my new found love of marjoram. Do you see the Paprika jar off to the left of the picture? We tried the shelf to have the spices on different levels and I spent most of time picking up all the spices that I knocked over so we just keep them straight on the shelf now.
6. Pancake Mix- Whether you cook from scratch or Aunt Jemima, this is a great thing to have in the pantry because you can whip up a quick and easy breakfast for dinner any night of the week and the whole family will be happy! Dinnertime is when we usually take the time to make waffles which I don't usually do in the morning because we are rushing out to school so we enjoy having them at dinnertime and we all have our favorite toppings from syrup to cinnamon and sugar. We all enjoy our pancakes and waffles from my homemade pancake mix and yummy Cinnamon Roll Pancakes.
7. Soup- We are not a big soup family but we do like soup when it is cold and my husband requires it when he is sick (claiming that Campbell's chicken noodle is the only thing that makes him better). It is also great when you get to dinnertime and you forgot to defrost the meat. If you put soup with crackers or toast, you have a nice meal that will fill you up. My soups are hidden behind those but they are baked potato and Italian Wedding soup. We also enjoy our Chicken and Rice Casserole which is made with cream of chicken soup.
8. Baking Mix- Whether you like to use Biscuit or Jiffy Baking Mix or make your own, this is a great thing to have in the cupboard. You can expand any meal with some nice drop biscuits, 7UP Sour Cream Biscuits, or Greek Yogurt Biscuits. If you need more of a meal, try some Cheesy Garlic Pizza Bites. It can be used for breading chicken as well!
Click on any of the links to the original recipe if you want to try out these great recipes. We use them all the time- sometimes because they are planned and other times when the plan doesn't go exactly right. I can always make a meal from the items above and sometimes I add a little something from the freezer to make it a little more full but we always have these things in the house just in case. Perfect for us or when we have company!!
What do you keep in your pantry so that you can quickly throw together a meal for your family? Are there any go to recipes that you keep in the back of your head if you need a meal quickly? Do you always have those things in the house?

Kid Geography: Scrambled States of America and activities
My son has been interested in the United States puzzles. We have one that is a wooden puzzle that we have been working on which he loves. The states are color coded so that the similar state colors go together but he is starting to recognize them and try to read the names of the capitols.
We got a Melissa and Doug floor puzzle with the states because he was enjoying the other puzzle. It was a great find at a consignment sale which we use all the time.
The Melissa and Doug floor puzzles are great because they are durable and if you can find them at a deep discount, they are well worth the cost. We have a puzzle shelf in a corner of our spare bedroom (which has gotten a little out of hand). If you are looking at the picture and wondering why all of my puzzles are upside down, all of the big Melissa and Doug floor puzzles have the box tops underneath so that my son can get to the pieces without having to open the top. The boxes are really hard to open and my son used to have to ask me to open each one which makes puzzle making less of an independent activity and the boxes were left on the ground and getting smashed and broken. The boxes are the same size so they can easily pile on top of each other. It is always great to make your learning tools so that kids can get at them when they want. We also have two foam floor mats on top which he likes to get out and building and the cubby holds other extra smaller stuff.
When we went to the library, I saw a DVD for the Scrambled States of America which I thought looked interesting. It was really funny and had all of the states deciding to try out other areas to see if they liked a different part of the country. It was a great story about liking who you are for the kids but also great because it mentions all of the state names and moves them around the country and then moving back. There are two other stories on the DVD including This Land is Your Land and The Star Spangled Banner which both had great pictures and songs through out.
I learned that there was a book that goes with which is The Scrambled States of America by Laurie Keller.
I think that we might have to check that one out of the library too!! My son thought the story on the DVD was very entertaining and talked about it for days.
We also got a great deal on a globe from Leap Frog at a garage sale (it sells for $95 in stores and online and my mom got to $7). My son has played with it a little bit but it is still advanced for him. I think that it is great to introduce a few things that they can play with before it is something that they will use to learn with because then it doesn't seem like as much work because they are already familiar with how it works and how to use it.
If we have lots of fun with it now, I am hopefully that all of things that we will have to learn later will be easier like state capitols but we are long way from learning that information. We are also going to look for a book that is good for different information about the states so that we can learn a little more about each state starting with our own, Virginia. I hope that you have fun learning about the United States with your kids because there are a lot of fun things to learn!!!
