A Turn in the Road Book Review

A Turn in the Road (Blossom Street) by Debbie Macomber was the next in the Blossom Street series which I was really excited to pick up.  I was glad to find out that it was about Bethanne and her family because it seems like it has been a long time since she was mentioned in one of the other books.

In this book, Bethanne decides that she is going to leave her thriving business to go on a three week vacation with her ex-mother-in-law, Ruth, so that she doesn't have to drive across the country alone.  When she comes up with this great idea, her daughter, Annie, decides that she wants to come too!  They leave Washington state to drive all the way to Florida for Ruth's 50th high school reunion.  This trip has been an adventure that Ruth has been planning for years and her husband's work always got in the way and the trip was cancelled.  Now that Ruth's husband has passed, she is determine to do this trip, even if it means that she has to travel alone but luckily she now has two people driving with her to keep her company.  As the trip goes on, the women learn that it isn't just seeing some long lost friends but she is also looking to reconnect with her long lost high school love.  The trip brings them to a bunch of different adventures along the way including the first stop where they all help out one of Ruth's oldest friends run a diner during the busiest time.  It was an amazing book and I took an emotional journey with the characters and I suggest you pick it up to find out all the adventures yourself!

Check out this book and all the other Blossom Street novels at your local library or bookstore.  I think that they are great summer reads that have you getting to know the characters and looking forward to the next time they are in a book!!  I am super sad to be on the last book in the series but I am hoping that there are a lot more to come (and fast before I finish the Cedar Cove novels)!!

Thrifty Thursday: Summer Reading programs

I can't saw enough about joining summer reading programs with your kids.  We are currently doing the Pottery Barn reading program which has had us reading a lot of books that we normally wouldn't read like Fancy Nancy and some other fairy and princess books.  Most of the books were interesting even if they weren't books that my son would normally pick.  It is always good to expand your child's reading horizons.  We also had four of the books already in our book collection and only two of them had come off the shelf previously.  We started with these four books and after we read each one, my son used a check mark to check each one off the list.

He was super excited to read the books and check books off the list.  In case you would like to read some of the book on the list, check out more details on the Pottery Barn website here.  If you read the books on their list, your child gets to pick out a free book to take home with them.  If you don't have the books at your house, a quick trip to the library will get a few other of the books you are looking to read.  I stopped in and picked some up at one local library.  Then, we read those at home.  I reserved a few others that were new and harder to find.  We went to the library to get those and we found all of the rest of the books (minus one) and read them while we were still at the library.  We have one book left to go as soon as it comes in off of reserve.  Your child will learn to set goals, mark off lists, and the joy of finishing and getting rewarded.  In addition, there is no cost for you!!!

We hope to be done by the time the summer reading programs starts at the local library.  We are going to sign up for that one next!  They set a goal of a number of books to read and after the child reads those books (or has them read to them), you bring in the list or put them in online.  Then you go to the library and the child gets a coupon book to get free and reduced things for them to do all summer.  They also got a bee with their name written on it to put up at the library.  My son was so excited by his bee that he pointed it out every time we went to the library after it was put up.  He also checked to make sure all of the bees were attached properly to the walls and no other friends pulled them down!  He noticed the different names up at different library which he thought was interesting but he really owned the one at his library.  In addition, we got to have a free ice cream cone from McDonalds, got a free bag at a thrift store (which came with a $10 free coupon and a free book), as well as some other coupons that we used at the Nature Centers and parks through the summer to get small little gifts like magnifying glass, stickers, and other toys.  It gave us a reason to make it out to all of the parks through the summer because we knew that there was another little treat in store.  It was a reminder all summer how important reading is for us!!!

I hope that you check out some of you local reading programs this summer and see what fun and free things that you can do with your kids!!!  I promise that it will be rewarding for both of you to read lots of new books!!!  They will have treats to remember their adventure through the year and it will bring back all the great memories of the books that you read together.

Kid Math: Patterns

We read the Patterns book a few times but it was never a book that he picked off the book shelf for his choice.  I know that it is important to mix some real books in with the stories but my son still loves stories and characters that he can read about.  It isn't available through Amazon because it is only in library binding but you can see the link at Patterns (Mighty Math) by Sara Pistoia or check it out at your local library which is where I found my copy.

This book provides close up and whole pictures of animals talking about the pattern on their fur.  I would be a good book to read before the zoo so that you have something more to talk about at the zoo.

It also used the pattern of the lines of jelly beans which my son liked because they did a pattern similar at school on the calendar.  It is also a good hands on project if you use jelly beans or any snack (not only candy if you are trying to limit sugar like we are) to make a pattern.  Then your child can finish the pattern or continue it before eating their special snack.  It seems to me something that can easily be added to a daily routine and made more difficult as the child gets older.

Then they talk about pattern on wrapping paper.  It would be a great art project to take a wrapping paper based on your child's drawing ability and put it in the middle of paper so that they could draw the rest of the pattern around.  It would even be a nice project before fathers day to wrap their father's day presents in!!

Then they do the pattern of counting by one, five and tens as well as reading the calendar.  I don't have the room for a nice wall calendar like they have at school but we try to use the regular calendar to talk about what we are doing in the week and what we did last week as well as the the food we are going to eat during the week.  I think that we might give him his own calendar next year but I gave my mom my extra calendar this year because last year I had two that went to waste.  I never even thought that my son would love to play with a calendar but it is one of his favorite things to do!!!  If your kids are still learning the days of the weeks, you can outline the certain day in one color through the month so that they know that red means Monday even if they can't read.

We went with an old favorite of mine that my son pulled out of the closet:  Mastermind.  Ever played it?  Works for young and old minds alike to keep us thinking!!  We started with my little guy picking four different colors to put in and and then I put the colors in on the other side.  He told me how many I had right.  I got one white, none in the red, one in the black and one in the green and then none in the yellow so I explained how I knew that there was a blue one because I still needed four.  I put them in an order and he told me which ones were right so I moved around the other ones until he told me it was right.  We changed it up after we played a few rounds like this and we did other patterns with the colors.  Then, my son decided to take the next step and made them all one color.  It helped with logic and thinking so even though it is meant for 8 years old and up, I highly recommend making it a little easier and trying it with the preschool age children if you have it at your house!!

All parts of this books can be immediately put into action as different actions and crafts.  I hope that this helps you to find some fun activities to do with your kids this summer and throughout the year!!  I hope that you check out this book at your local library and see what your kids have to say about patterns.

Summer on Blossom Street Book Review

Summer on Blossom Street by Debbie Macomber was next in the Blossom Street series.  I reserved it at the library and it came in right in time.  I was super excited to read it but of course it was a hard covered book so it took a little longer because it was hard to carry everywhere with me but I finished it surprisingly fast in spite of the heavy weight of the book.
In this book, the Good Yarn starts another knitting class which is called Knit to Quit so that everyone trying to quit something can concentration on something else constructive like knitting.  Phoebe is leaving a bad relationship.  Alix is trying to quit smoking in order to have a baby with her husband.  Bryan Hutchinson, called "Hutch" by his friends, is trying to stop working so hard and work on rehabbing his finger after a bad injury (as well as lower his blood pressure).  All of the group formed with different interests and goals and ended up friends in the end.

At the same time, Ann Marie is dealing with her adopted daughter's biological father and custody issues.  Lydia and Brad have decided to adopt and have finally gotten approved but instead of finding a infant, they are placed with a temporary foster child, Casey, a little older than Cody, their son.  There are a lot of things going on for a lot of characters and they are all fascinating but I am not going to ruin the whole book so make sure you pick it up at your local library or bookstore and find out what happens!!!
I love the Blossom Street series and the writing of Debbie Macomber.  I only have two more left in the series so I will have to start with the next series soon.  Have you read this series?  I am going to go to the Cedar Cover books next but with my track record, I will go through them quickly so make sure you let me know where I should go next!!!

Menu Plan Monday 6/10

Monday- Basil Parmesan Chicken with pesto pasta
Tuesday- Raspberry Balsamic Chicken with simple fried rice
Wednesday- Buffalo Chicken Wraps with mac and cheese
Thursday- Tacos with saffron rice
Friday- Steak!!!
Saturday- Leftovers/Dinosaur Nuggets and smiles
Sunday- Omaha Burger and BLT/Olive Oil Pasta with pan fried zuchinni and garlic knots

Three days of chicken in a row might be moved around but I started writing down what we had in the freezer and I was filling in the blank with what was left- more chicken.  It is a good problem to have but I can get chicken cheaper per pound than ground beef so I haven't gotten any ground beef in awhile so I am trying to stretch it through the month.

Friday is supposed to be steak because my sister in law is going to bring them.  I just need to come up with the rest of the dinner to go with it.  I am thinking homemade mac and cheese and a new biscuit recipe that I found recently.  Stay tuned and see what I make!!

Hoping to make more progress in the cleaning out the freezer project.  I don't know if I mentioned it but when I took a quick inventory of the freezer, I found that I have around 19 bags of chicken broth.  Yup!!  I was putting them in plastic bags which hasn't worked out the best and I am going to switch to mason jars but I have 19 bags so I am going to have to figure out a few recipes to make with my chicken broth or it might take up the whole upstairs freezer when I am going to defrost the basement.  They take up the back of one whole shelf already so I guess we will see what I can use.  I don't have any more whole chickens to fill back up the broth so I want to make sure I save a little :)

What is your challenge this month??

Weekly Goals 6/9

This week was really packed with different adventures including my son's sickness.  Sunday he was a little sick but we thought that it was just recovering from bad eating and too much sun at my alumni weekend but Tuesday morning was greeted with him getting sick all over the couch.  Not a great sign for the week right?  Well, he seemed to be okay for the rest of the day but I didn't want to get anyone else sick so we didn't go out or do anything for the whole day which had us both stir crazy by the end of the day.

We had a great rest of the week and I think that we are going to plan for a quieter week next week.  Here is hoping that I can get things a little more organized around here because I feel like I am forever cleaning up.  Hopefully a good clean tomorrow will stop the madness!!  Hope you guys are having a good start to your summer (and a little less busy then me)!!!!
This Week:

Family Goals
  • Spend time with family- We had a great week together even with the sickness starting the week.  The rest of the week went much better!
  • Storytime at library- We had a great storytime at the library with a lot of great friends (and a few people that would have been better if they left).  We got to read a bunch of books about friends and talked about some different friends that they matched up on the felt board.  It was a nice activity that my little guy was super excited about.
  • Visit Torpedo factory to see friend- Ugh!  My son woke up and got sick all over the couch so we cancelled just in case that wasn't the end of that.  I was hoping to have a good week but this isn't the best start.
  • Music Together class- We were really excited that we finally got to register when this first opened.  I actually forgot and had to call my husband to get into the computer and sign us up.  What a great husband that he got us in before the class was totally full.  The class was great even though there were a ton of young kids there and lots of people were coming in really late.  It really bothers me when people disrupt the whole group because they can't make it there on time.
  • My Gym and 2-3 free plays- My husband took my son to the evening play time and he was so excited to show him everything.  We made it to three playtimes and our class.  On Friday, my son looked at me and said that he would like to go to My Gym and I had to break it to him that there weren't any open plays until Monday again.  I think that he would be there all day, everyday!
Personal Goals
  • Cut coupons- I don't know why I put this off for so long because it becomes more of a chore the longer I put it off.  I am planning on getting to it on Sunday...oops!
  • Get coupons on Friday- I did get my papers on Friday and there was only one coupon insert but it was worth the trip.
  • Go to PT for TMJ twice- I went to my PT twice this week and my therapist is going to be on vacation next week so nothing next week and we will see how long all this hard work stays to keep away the pain.
  • Shut off computer 6 nights to save energy- I shut off the computer every night and most days that we were going to be out of the house.
  • Finish reading Summer on Blossom Street by Debbie Macomber- Finished reading early in the week and review is posted.
  • Start next Spenser book or Debbie Macomber book- I started with the next Debbie Macomber book so that I could return it to the library and I finished it on Tuesday and posted the review.  I started the next Spenser book right after that while reading some science books at the same time.  Finished that and read another book, review posted shortly.
Home Management Goals
  • Clean dishes, counters and floors at least 5 days of the week- This week seemed to be messier than normal.  I don't know what was going on that the kitchen seemed to be continually messy and I was continually exhausted!  I did a little baking but not a ton but I guess I made a big mess.
  • Clean dishes one night and not wait until the morning- I can't remember if I did this early on in the week so but I did clean out all of the dishes and make a pile on Thursday night but didn't wash them..opps.  I was determined to do it on Friday night to make up for the week, especially since Friday is pizza night but that didn't happen either.  I did get them all washed up on Saturday even though it was a big pile!!
Blog Goals

  • Post one post everyday (schedule 7 posts so that can spend more time with family)- I have scheduled a bunch of posts for the week and have all of them up at the beginning except the weekly goals for next week because that takes all week to update and post.
  • Review book reviews completed during the week (if done)- Two reviews posted by Tuesday and the rest of the books are posted through out the week as they are completed.
  • Work on a few posts to work ahead for the coming week- I got a bunch of posts up for the rest of the month and hope to finish up some rough drafts of the other things that I am going to schedule through out the month.
  • Post Weekly Goals, Menu Plan Monday, and Thrifty Thursday Tip- I got them all posted!

    May Cooking Review

I had a slow start to the month with making mostly my normal recipes.  We had lots of banana bread and a batch of cookies.  I tried the Grapefruit Oatmeal muffins and they turned out super light and fluffy even though I changed a lot of the original recipe.  I shared our favorite blended salsa.  Then my dad called with a salad recipe that included a recipe for salad dressing that sounded yummy.  After that burst, I couldn't think of a thing that I wanted to make.  Do you ever have that problem?

I knew that I should be making something but nothing came to mind.  After too long of a break, I finally decided on what I was making.  Mango BBQ Sliders with stuff I had on hand.  Then, our air conditioning broke so most of the cooking and baking stopped so I didn't contribute to the heat.  It was a short list of recipes this month.

Check out my complete list below:
