The smaller pieces came back really quickly and I cut them up as they become less wilted. The tallest one took the longest but it came back to perfect health. I guess it depends on how far the water has to travel.
After the celery was all cut up, I added it to the fried rice. It is my husband's favorite use for his celery and he really enjoyed his yummy lunch.
What was I going to with the bottom of the celery? Why regrow it, of course!!! Can I think of anything more frugal then taking the bottom of your celery and putting it in water to grow a new celery? Nope! Did I think that it would work? Nope! What do you think?
I cut the bottom off of the stalks of celery and put a few cuts in the bottom with the knife. I put it in a small bowl and added water. I left it on the window sill to see if it would grow.
In just a few days, the center started to pop up. I was really excited to see that so I started a second one next to it.
Here is what it looks like after about 4 or 5 days:
And here is my first one that has been going for about 7 days:
Isn't that neat! I think that it would be neat to do with the kids as a science experiment. It does take a little bit of patient to wait and see if grow but it is something that you can see the change in every day. I am still not sure how long this process takes or if we are going to have celery to eat but it is a fun experiment. I hope that some others try this and let me know how it works out for them!
Have you ever done this before to give wilted celery new life or grow celery from the end? How did it work for you? Does it grow only in water or am I going to have to plant it to get it to grow more?

That's wicked cool! I've got to try that!
ReplyDeleteI am super excited about it. They are getting bigger now so I going to add some extra pictures as they grow. I hope that it works for you too!!
DeleteAlison,
ReplyDeleteDid you know that if you wrap your celery in aluminum foil it last for months in the refrigerator? A wise Older woman told my brother that one time and it does work. I started doing this the last 6 months, I never have celery to throw away anymore because it gets soft. I never knew that this is why I am sharing! I will have to try growing it that would be a great thing for my 3 grandchildren to do with me, I watch them while there mommies work. Thanks for sharing!

I am sure the grandkids would love to watch it grow!! I know that I do. I haven't heard the aluminum foil trick but stranger things have worked. I had some celery in my fridge and my mom brought hers so I had lots to use up and didn't beat the clock but it bounced right back after sticking it in water :)
DeleteMy second attempt is still growing Alison. I did plant it but not sure to tell you if that is the thing to do or not. It's been a fun.
ReplyDeleteMine are starting to get a little gross on the outside but I am too much of a wimp to plant them in dirt now :) Let me know how it works out and I am going to leave mine in water for the time being. Maybe when it gets warmer and they can go outside, I will put them in dirt!
DeleteI've been seeing this on other blogs and wanting to try it. My mom always used to keep celery in a tall Tupperware of water when were kids - now I know why!
ReplyDeleteMy mom had the same container with celery and sometimes carrots in it! It had a little plastic thing that pulled it up out of the water :) I pinned it ages ago on pintrest on how to bring the celery back from wilted and I just decided that it would be a good time to try. It is nice to see something growing in this horrible weather!
