California Girls Book Review

I had reserved California Girls by Susan Mallery before and not gotten to read it before it was due back last time.  I kept the sticker and said that I would reserve it again so that I could finally read it.  The great thing is that it came at a time when I didn't have any other books and it came in paper back instead of hard back so it was even lighter to carry around.  Of course, I didn't need to do that for long because I finished it quickly.

The California sunshine’s not quite so bright for three sisters

who get dumped in the same week…

Finola, a popular LA morning-show host, is famously upbeat until she’s blindsided on live TV by the news that her husband is sleeping with a young pop sensation who has set their affair to music. While avoiding the tabloids and pretending she’s just fine, she’s crumbling inside, desperate for him to come to his senses and for life to go back to normal.

Zennie’s breakup is no big loss. Although the world insists she pair up, she’d rather be surfing. So agreeing to be the surrogate for her best friend is a no-brainer—after all, she has an available womb and no other attachments to worry about. Except…when everyone else, including her big sister, thinks she’s making a huge mistake, being pregnant is a lot lonelier—and more complicated—than she imagined.

Never the tallest, thinnest or prettiest sister, Ali is used to being overlooked, but when her fiancé sends his disapproving brother to call off the wedding, it’s a new low. And yet Daniel continues to turn up “for support,” making Ali wonder if maybe—for once—someone sees her in a way no one ever has.

But side by side by side, these sisters will start over and rebuild their lives with all the affection, charm and laugh-out-loud humor that is classic Susan Mallery.

I loved meeting Finola, Zennie, and Ali in this great book that follows the sisters through their horrible breakups at the same time.  Finola's life is totally changed when she finds out that her husband cheated on her and she is trying to find a way to put her life back together to move forward but putting all the blame on her husband.  Zennie has decided that she doesn't really think that pairing up with anyone is for her.  Her fourth date ends up with him walking out after realizing that she isn't really into him.  Ali is engaged to be married and she is broken up with by her soon to be ex-brother in law.  Ali has to pay for calling off a wedding that is right around the corner and only does it with the help of Daniel, her ex's brother.  All three sisters are dealing with their mother really wanting grandchildren and none of them in relationships to give her one.  It is a crazy ride with these relationships but you will see that all of the sisters come out the other side in a better place.  I hope that you check out this book and enjoy it as much as I did.  It was a great summer read with lots going on in each sister's life so that you were really hoping that things would work out for each of them.  You have to pick up the book to find out for yourself but I hope that you will enjoy the great writing and amazing characters.
