I had another book on my shelf that I waited to see if it was part of a series but I decided to pick up the book and read it before checking anything out. Between Friends: An Anthology by Debbie Macomber turned out to be a book with letters back and forth between friends. It was their whole life being best friends learning how to get through it together even when they are apart.
The story of a remarkable friendship—told in a remarkable way. A
story in which every woman will recognize herself…and her best friend
Jillian
Lawton and Lesley Adamski. Two girls from very different backgrounds
become best friends in the turbulent 60s, but their circumstances and
choices—and their mistakes—take them in opposite directions. Lesley
stays in their hometown. She marries young, living a life defined by the
demands of small children, never enough money, and an
unfaithful husband. Jill lives those years on a college campus shaken by
the Vietnam War, and then as an idealistic young lawyer in New York
City.
But they always remain friends.
Through the years
and across the miles, Jill and Lesley confide everything to each
other—every grief and joy. Because the quality of a friendship is the
quality of a life.
I thought it was a great story of friendship but it was a tough story to read because of all the tough things that they went through in their lives. The two best friends write letters back and forth and to others in this this book following through from childhood into their adult years. It is great to see all of the things going on with the added interesting fact that it really isn't just a story being told. It still sucks you in and gives you snapshots of both of their lives. I hope that you pick up this book to read for yourselves soon. It is a great story that makes you realize how great your life is and how great it is to have friends.
I have a life long friend and we have always communicated since she moved away at 17 and married by letters and recently by FB messenger some but we still both prefer letters. She has been my friend since grade school and in some ways I feel I know her better than anyone else. She even named a daughter after me. I have seen her through an abusive alcoholic husband who died and all the ups and downs in her life. She has been there for me through multiple health challenges and marriages. Including abuse and alcoholism with 2 of my husbands. She is such a hard worker and I really admire her strength. I feel I can tell her anything with out judgement. We are 3 days apart on our birthdays so she is the oldest by 3 days. lol. Letters were always our connection and very powerful. Take care.
ReplyDeleteThis might be a little emotional for you because it sounds like the plot of the story but I highly recommend this book. I think that you will like it!!
