Kids Wednesday: K is for Kitten, Kite and Kangaroo

There are so many books that you can read for K week that it was a little overwhelming.  We started by pulling out the books that we already had at home.

We started with the K books which are really fun for all of the letters.  There is one that tells a story with the letter K and then another that goes around and puts all of the things with the letter into a box.  They are both easy readers for those beginning to read and entertaining to start off the letter with a list of the words.

Then we went to the library with a long list.  I checked ahead of time what was in our library so I wasn't looking for things that were already checked out.  It is great when there is a computer system that you can use when you don't have to worry about how much time it is going to take and if the kids are going to be patient (because they aren't).  I found the kangaroo and koala books.

Then, I found a few books about Kings.

There were a few others that I found including a kite and Kola Nuts which I picked up to add to the pile.

There were a bunch about kisses.

But our favorite was All Kinds of Kisses which we read almost every day and got to practice our kisses.  I couldn't turn down Eskimo kisses and lots of snuggles from my little guy since I am sure that I don't have much longer for all his love.  Even if it isn't K week at your house, this might be a nice favorite to read to get mom a little extra love.

I hope that you get a few and check them out for yourself because they are great books.  I have an even longer list that I pulled up but many weren't available at my library and still others were already checked out so these are the books that I put in my K basket.

We had a busy week with things going on at school so our first craft at home was the King's crown.  I drew the line for him to cut across the middle of the construction paper and then he cut.  We taped the one end together and stapled the other so that it would make a crown.  But first, he decorated in stickers, puffy stickers and jewels.  He had a blast making it and wore it many times during the week.

There were many other projects in school including sorting the upper case and lower K's.  It was a lot of cutting and gluing in addition to the sorting of the upper case and lower case.

They made K for Kisses with cardboard covered in aluminum foil.  It is a perfect craft to do at home with stuff that you have around.  The aluminum foil is hard to draw on so make sure you have something to stick on it to make the eyes and anything else you want to make.  The tag says K is for Kiss.

They made their place mats for the week with Kites on them. It was great practice to make the triangles and do coloring.

They also did a Scholastic Weekly Reader with Kites where they had to make the pattern on the tail of the kite.  This is something that you can repeat without the help of the pre-printed guide.  It might be nice with a longer tail so that they can continue with the pattern.

They also made kites from paper, sticks and stickers with streamers for a tail.

They made kiwis which I thought was a great plan and could work with snack time if you have some one who might be more willing to try them then my little man.  Start with a paper plate and color around the edge with green.

Then they can paint around the edge with brown and make the middle stamped with black seeds.  Doesn't it look like the fruit?

Something that they do for most of the letters which is a pattern of dot markers on the letters.  When they start the year, the teacher starts an easy pattern and the kids finish to make the letters but as the year goes on and the kids get better, they can make their own patterns.

They did a sheet with the starting letter K where they colored the pictures and wrote the words on the line under it.  It is great for those practicing their writing and starting to read because it gives them a hint with the picture.

The letter of the week was covered in keys by all of the kids in the class.  They have had fun doing that all year with different letters and it is a great way to reinforce the letters because they can look at them decorated on the wall with the different words that start with the letter.

There are so many activities with the letter K because there are so many words that start with K.  I was going to do some other crafts but the week got a little too busy to get them all done.  I hope that you try out a few that you might enjoy with your little ones while learning the letter K.
