I have been trying to make something that doesn't involve sugar and candy because it seems that all kids get over the holiday. We did goldfish bags last year which you can see here.
I decided last year that we were going to do a treat with crayons this year instead of making something from scratch because I still had a few boxes left from my back to school freebie shopping. I went on the internet and found this great printable. My husband printed it on his great color printer so that I would be able to just cut and tape it to the box. I drew the heart and my son colored it in and wrote his name on the back.
I don't know where I found the original printable but I saved it last year. I found it here again when I searched but I don't know if that is where I found it the first time so hopefully it was there. I found another cute one here.
I might actually have to buy some this year after the holidays so that we have more for next year or else we are going to be making our from scratch next year. It is always hard to tell what kids will be into from year to year so I am not sure if I will end up getting anything unless something really catches my eye and is super cheap. But the good news is that we are ready for this year and way earlier then I ever have been!
We also did a few crafts and activities leading up to the week to celebrate. In case you want to do a few last minute things, here are some ideas. We made a homemade valentine for one of my son's friends but he decided that he really liked it so I am not sure if he is going to give it up or make another one.
He made a wreath from a paper plate. There is a heart out of a fuzzy pipe cleaner. With the choices of stickers, dot markers, and glitter glue, my son decided to use them all. He put his name on the heart but it was with a pencil so you couldn't even see it.
This is two hearts glued together in order to make a valentine's pocket for him to put his valentine's inside. He had the most fun decorating this and decided that he needed to label it.
He made a bow and arrow like cupid which he loves the beading process but still doesn't get the idea of the cupid but it it is a cute idea.
We also did a non-standard measuring unit which was fun but my son didn't want to measure anything that wasn't on the sheet so be prepared to have another sheet of things around the house that your kids can measure and see how many hearts tall those things are. He loved measuring so I can't wait to turn this into something else in addition to only Valentine's Day. If you want to download this fun activity, you have to set up a free account through Teachers Pay Teachers and go here to download this free file.
We did a huge heart shaped puzzle with addition problems. My son had a blast putting them all together. It was worth all of the cutting that did!!! If you want to get get it, set up a free account through Teachers Notebook and get it here. Super glad that I found this new website and this great activity.
We still have lots of great learning ahead for V week. We are going to build Valentine's Sentences and Color the Heart and Valentine Math Sheets.
We have some not Valentine's Day ideas too like V is for Volcano sheets which has tracing sheets and V Dice rolling game. All of these downloads are free and great resources for moms or teachers.
I hope that you have a great week and enjoy the Valentine's Week with lots of great learning put into the holiday. We have lots of fun planned for V week!

I love the goldfish and the crayon ideas - very cute!
ReplyDeleteThere are so many things out there that I probably don't need to buy any but I feel like I need to do them both....he got lots of practice writing his name :)
DeleteI would have loved those crayon valentines when I was a kid. Great ideas.
ReplyDeleteI am sure that the kids would rather have candy but anything is better than handling them more candy and sending them home with it from a mom's perspective. I think that we still have some from last year hidden in the cupboard :)
