What did you do at the library?

We made butter!!!  That is right!!  Our children's librarian read stories about winter and cold and during the last story, she went running out the room, leaving us to singing "When you are happy and you know it."  She came back in with a container of whipping cream and glass gerber baby food containers.

She filled the container with the whipping cream.  Then, it was passed around for all the kids to shake the container.  They were all super excited to shake it even though they didn't know what was going on.  It is great at this age to see the excitement over the fact that they get to share :)

At the end, it was supposed to turn into butter (in the story it was ice cream because the cows were cold).  Sadly, the kids didn't shake enough so it was still just thicker cream but she let my little one take it home and we shook it while we were still in the library.  We got to go back and show her our butter.  Although, since this was not unexpected for her, she played more impressed for my four year old who was super excited.

I poured the liquid into another container and tried to squeeze out the butter the best that I could because the last book that I read said it would spoil otherwise.

I used the butter for garlic knots the night that we made it because I was super afraid that it was going to go bad.  I don't know what spoiled butter tastes like or smells like so it is best to just use such a neat project while I knew that it was still good.  I decided that I was going to use the cream/buttermilk for bread or something else fun soon.

Sorry the picture is a little dark since I didn't know that I was going to post this but it was really neat :)  It is a great craft to make with the kids because it teaches them patience and science (plus it is really neat).  I hope that you try it soon!!
