It's All Too Much: An Easy Plan for Living a Richer Life with Less Stuff by Peter Walsh was another on the list after I read another of Peter Walsh's books. It was a great guide to how to clean things up and keep them clean. The book was broken into two parts to make it even more easy!!
Part One: The Clutter Problem
Part Two: Putting Clutter in Its Place
There was a main point that I hadn't thought about before which was to think of the purpose of the room. If your family room is for watching TV and relaxing, that means that everything that doesn't help with that should be removed. It also means that you shouldn't store DVDs in another area that you have to go searching for them in order to watch a movie. It is super easy to think about the different things that you currently do in the room and what you need room to do.
I am hoping that this is just the push I need to start the organization project that I have been dreaming about. We moved into a house that needed to be fixed up a lot. We did a lot of work and as we fixed up each room, I only moved back in the things that I wanted in the room. Sadly, I put the rest of the stuff in the basement :( When we got a new TV, I am happy to say after a ton of discussion, we were able to sell the old TV on Craigslist. The old electronics were another matter because they were small enough to sit in one area so that they would be ready when we wanted to use them. Do you know a lot of people that made a second entertainment area and installed a CD player because we had one!!! Luckily, with help from a friend, we did a garage sale and sold tons of stuff including that CD player. I cleared out a bunch of stuff and made $150 so it was a double win. I probably have enough in the basement to set up a garage sale every weekend but my street doesn't get a lot of traffic so it probably won't be worth it. We are starting to put a bunch of things on Craiglist and Ebay to see if we can sell some of the items... other are going to a local charity for donation (first trip already made).
After the basement, I am going to work on every room in the house to bring it back to what I would like them to look like. I might need to keep a steady stream of Peter Walsh books coming in the house in order to stay motivated. I hope that you are motivated to start reading this book and check it out at your local library or bookstore!!
