Back Story (Spenser) by Robert B. Parker was the next in the Spenser series that I needed to read and it wasn't at my library. The lucky thing of doing lots of library programs with my son is that I am in lots of libraries. The bad part is that I don't usually make it out of the kids section. I made an effort to try to go down the aisle that would have this book in it so that I could grab it. The great thing is that I found it after only having to wander down a few aisles with my very energetic four year old who had no interest in looking at books that weren't in the kids section!! Score- one win for mom and leaving the library with the book in hand.
This book was about Darryl (a woman), a friend of Paul's, who was looking to find out who killed her mother 28 years previously. After Spenser starting looking into the case and had many people threaten his life, Darryl tells him that he has learned too many things that she didn't want to know and she wants him to stop. Spenser tells her that he can't stop since his life has been threatened too many times and he needs to find out the truth even if he doesn't tell her. He has people guarding Susan and people working with him to protect every one's lives until he finds out the truth. It was a semi-surprising ending but not because of the "who done it" factor but on how they got to the resolution. Spenser always does it his own way and learns the truth. I hope that I didn't ruin the surprise if you are going to check it out but it is always about the journey so check out how they got to the answer of this 28 year old mystery.
I really like the Spenser character and the books series so this was no exception. I hope that everyone takes a second to read at least one of Robert Parker's books and see if they like it. They are fast reads and although categorized as mystery, not really the suspenseful scary ones so they are right up my alley!! I hope that you think so too :) Check them out and let me know what you think!!
