The Hunger Games Book Review

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins has been on my to read list for a long time.  My cousin told me to make sure that I had the other two ready to go because I would want to read them all in a row.  I went online to the library to reserve both the second and the third book and there was a waiting list.  So are you ready to hear where I was in the list???  Over 650 people waiting for each book.  I have slowly moved up in the ranks and started to get excited when I got near 350 in August (there were still almost 600 people waiting for each but I couldn't figure out how long before I should start the Hunger Games when I was finally going to come up to the top of the list).

I finally decided to open and read the first one because my lovely friend Ann let me borrow Book 2 and 3!!!  YEAH!!!  The last person in the world to jump on the bandwagon... THIS IS THE BEST BOOK!!!!  I started it Monday afternoon during naptime and read three chapters.  I was afraid that it was going to be gruesome so I didn't want to read it before bed so I just got three chapters read on the first day.  Then Tuesday came.  I read and read and read (and read) and finished Tuesday/Wednesday.  It was 12:45 am on Wednesday morning but since I didn't go to sleep yet, it was still Tuesday to me :)

Since I haven't actually said anything about the book, I probably should :)  The Hunger Games are like the Olympics of the country with 12 different districts competing until the death while the rest of the people watch at home on television.  Every time, one girl and one boy from each district is chosen by a drawing to see who is going to the reaping for the district.  The story follows her life and gives you the background about her father, mother, sister and all the people in the town while going through the traditions of why there is a reaping and Hunger Games.

It was hard for me to follow during the first few chapters until I realized that the main character was a girl but once I got that, they were already deep into the story plot and I was hooked.  This was an amazing book and I hope that everyone checks it out....maybe not at the library but I am sure you can find a friend who has it!!  If you have already read it, what did you think?  Did you see the movie??  How did it stack up??  I am borrowing that next but trying to decide if I can force my husband to read the book before the movie :)
