Thinking Foward to 2016 and Saving Money

Tons of people have been setting goals for 2016.  I don't normally have resolutions but there are certainly things that are in my head so I figured that I would share.  They are normally the same every year and I usually add a few each year...some drop off but that is a great place to start.  I am probably going to be blogging on most of them too so you will see how I am doing.

1. Read 100 books:  I would rather get to 150 but as long as I am over 100, I will be super happy with myself.  I like reading and it is way to make sure that I am taking time for myself with a frugal habit because I get all of the books for free at the library.

2. Meal Planning:  I have been meal planning for a few years and I feel like it is really helpful to know whether I need something when I am at the store because I know what I am having for the week.  I would like to say that I am going to do monthly meal planning but it frequently doesn't work out that way.  I get to use all of the items in the fridge and freezer before they go back and I don't buy more then our family can use.

3. Spend under $1800 in groceries:  I have my notebook with the last three years in it and there were two near $1500 and one at $1100.  I am going to continue to track each purchase that I make with the amount, store and date for each month to come up with the total amount spent in the month.  I think that this is totally doable but I guess time will tell if the deals are still to be had.  I always seem to change and meet the goal of staying under $160 per month which would bring me to $1920 for the year.  My husband threw out $1800 as the number so that is what I am saying but I would be much happier if it was under $1600.

4. Redeem Credit Card Points for Balance:  We get 1% for all purchases and 5% for whatever the monthly specials are.  I activate the 5% in order to get the additional money.  When the total comes up to over $20 then I apply it to my total.  Normally I do it quarterly because that is when I can activate the extra rewards too.  I don't track how much money I save but this last year was a little different because of all of the construction and things going on the house move.

5. Meet Daily Goals for Swagbucks:  I did as much as I could with the remaining month that I had of the year.  I earned one $25 gift card with my work.  I am going to try to earn one gift card a month to use towards grocery and other purchases to save a little money.  I hope that this is something totally possible for me but I know that it will take a lot of work.

I tried working a little more in 2015 and I will be working in 2016 too to try to bring in a little more money to cover expenses.  I am also going to try to sell things on facebook, craigslist and eBay if I really get my act together.  I was making around $50 a month selling coupons online and now with everything else going on, I am having a hard time making time to even go through my coupons.  Here is hoping that I start the new year off right with saving and making money!!!

What do you do to save or earn money for your family??

March Challenge Take 3!

I have a new blog that I love to read which you can check out here.  Make sure you note that she is in Canada so some things sound a little different then the United States but I find her blog to really interesting.  It talks a lot about budget and financing.  She has a new challenge for March to Take 3 (cause it is the third month).  It consists of three goals: Personal, Financial, and Decluttering.  Please join us in the challenge and set your own goals.

Here are my goals for March:

Personal-

  • Read at least 6 books in March
  • Go to exercise class at least once a week (or at least 4 times in the month)
  • Meet with some of the schools that we are looking at for my son

Financial-

  • Set up Roth IRAs for myself and my husband
  • Decide what we are doing about a 529 for my son
  • Continue to maintain grocery budget of $160 for the month

Decluttering-

  • Continue selling on ebay and aim for $50 profit in March
  • Gather all yard sale items and tag and box them to be ready for yard sale in either April/May in friend's neighborhood (including making my husband go through some of his stuff which usually doesn't happen).

I already got started by making some phone calls and appointments. We are going to meet with a financial person and my son's school so that we can move forward with the goals.

Do you have any goals that you would like to accomplish this month? Join us in working to meet your goals!!

Books I Want to Read in 2014

I have been putting a lot of thought into what I want to read in 2014.  Since I read so much last year, I know that I will be adding to the list as I go but here are some of the books that are already on my list (already above 150).  I guess we will see what new things I find this year through my different publishers that send things and the library.  I am also going to read some of the books in the Robert Parker series that were published with different authors.  I am going to have my work cut out for me!!!

I hope that I can get some of the books off this shelf and down to the bottom when they are read (without just refilling it)!!

Let me know if you have any other ideas to add to the list.

Books I Read in 2013

I am super excited to say that I read a bunch more books this year then last year.  I didn't know if last year was just a fluke but here are all of the books that I read in 2012 in case you want to see that list too.  My cousin told me that I needed to stop reading only educational books and try to read lots more fun books so I picked up a bunch of new series and authors that I hadn't read before and I am happy that I did because it was a very entertaining outlet to loose myself in books again.

Total Books Read in 2013    139

Can you believe that I read 61 more books this year!!!

Here is the list of all of the books that I read this year with the books crossed off that I read.  Sadly, there are still some books on the list that I haven't read this year but I put on my list because they are still sitting on my shelf in my bedroom staring at me.  I need to do better next year about reading the books that I have already at home so consider that one of my goals for 2014.

I have gotten most of my books in the last few years through the library reserve program to read exactly what I want when I want to read it.  I highly recommend the best frugal reading tip!! It helps me to not pile my house with more books because I have a horrible problem getting rid of books that I have read even if I don't think that I will read them again so it fights against my hording tendencies.  It is also super green to share (or reuse) books that lots of people will use.  So no matter the reason, it should fit all New Year's Resolutions to start reading books from the library.  Some of my books do come free through book reading programs, the give away shelf at the library and my parents who pass on some that they think that I will like but most are straight from the library and I hope that you will join me in reading lots in 2014!

Stay tuned for the list of the books that I am going to try to read in 2014 soon!

What does a day look like?

I decided to write a list of things and see how a day goes to share it with all of you.  I picked a random Thursday since weekdays are a little different then weekends.  See what a day in my life looks like and let me know if it sounds like yours?!

7:00 am:

-Woke up and brushed teeth and went downstairs

-Put ingredients in the bread machine to make a loaf of sandwich bread

-Made lunch for husband and son

-Made oatmeal for my husband's breakfast

-Make corn bread for dinner that night.  Yum, love that stuff.

-Bake frozen cookies since the oven was heated up.  I went to Let's Dish with my friend which was super fun and they messed up her order so they gave us both free desserts.  These were the heath bar and they were amazing... these were the last 6.

- Start applesauce bread in the mixer.  If you are thinking that this looks a little orange for applesauce, it is actually some apple and carrot sauce that I found which I figured would make a good bread.

-Make pancakes from scratch for son and I for breakfast with extras to freeze.

-Put load of darks in the washer

8:30 am:

-Socks and shoes on and out to the car

-Left to take my son to school

9:00 am:

-Dropped my son at school and headed home...forget to stop at CVS to get medicine. UGH!

-Talked to my parents on the phone because they are coming down today (see why I forgot to stop)

9:15 am:

-Turned out TV to have a little entertainment in the kitchen while I was working.

-Finished making applesauce bread (aka cinnamon bread if my son asks)

-Received call from online pharmacy and had to ask a few questions and pay bill

-Folded blankets and cleaned up family room when I heard the washer beep

10:00 am:

-Put applesauce bread in the oven

Put clothes in dryer

-Rinsed dishes in the sink and filled the dishwasher (leaving the dishes that needed to be hand washed on counter)

-Took Sandwich Bread out of bread machine

-Back downstairs to take the recycling.

-Decided to take a break and cut first set of coupons while watching the rest of Rachael Ray.  My piles are in the way of where all the baked goods need to go so it is better if I get them cut then just moving them around the house.

-Take loaf of bread out of pan and put in tupperware to cool

-Start cutting second set of coupons

11:00 am:

-Take out loaf of applesauce bread to cool.

-Finished second set of coupons cut and filed (sad that there is still one more but have to stop to make pumpkin muffins because they should have already been in the oven....UGH).

-Mix up pumpkin muffins and put in oven, not before running out of the non-stick spray that was in reaching distance so I got out the step stool and reached up to get the other one while getting a cramp in my leg.

-Rinse the dishes and fill the dishwasher.

11:30 am:

-Realize that I am out of butter in the upstairs fridge and freezer and head downstairs to grab butter from the freezer in the basement.  after grabbing, I realize that the dryer is no longer running so I stop and fold the laundry while upstairs the timer for the muffins is going off!!!

-Run upstairs and take out the muffins realizing that I don't have a hot pad on the counter so I grab that first and cover the counter.  Muffins now cooling.

12:00 pm

-Get out recipe and ingredients to make new cookie bar recipe.

-Hear phone beep in the other room and realize that I missed my parents calling.  I called them and found out that they left at 11:30 am.  Talking while running the mixer because I don't have enough time left.

12:20 am

-Put cookie bars in the oven and they take at least 20 minutes to cook which is all the time that I have left before leaving to pick up my son.

-Clean up baking ingredients while I am making the batter.

-Take a shower!  I didn't take one this morning because I was too busy and I did take one last night before dinner because I was sweaty from the park and trying to combat the sunburn that I got at the park....  I still felt gross before getting in the shower and covered in all my cooking messes.

-While the water is warming up, run around and put away some laundry that you moved at some point this morning from the kitchen floor where it was dropped to the living room couch.

-Remember that I have to wash the shower curtain liner (we have one of those fabric ones which is nice to throw into the washing machine and it stays cleaner) so I balance on the edge of the tub to get it down because I am too short to reach the hooks otherwise and run to the basement (in only my towel) to wash that so that it will be ready to hang when I get home.

-Grab the stuff of the printer in the basement and throw it on the counter on the way back up through the kitchen.

12:40 pm

-Standing in the kitchen in my towel to see if the bars are cooked before I run to get dressed and try to play beat the clock with the kitchen timer again!!

-Take out cookie bars to cool while I am off with my busy afternoon.

-Leave to pick up my son with no lunch!!  How is that possible since I had so much "free" time?

1:00 pm

-Pick up my son from school and talk to my mom friend who just so happens to be the car in front of me in the pick up line. Jump back in the car when the front of the line starts to move and read about 4 pages in my book while we are winding our way up to the front.

-Look at all the art work in his bag while stopped at the stop sign because he comes home with tons of new stuff every day and try to ask enough questions to find out what he did at school and what he ate for lunch...did I eat lunch yet? Well, some but I know that we are going home to have more.

1:05 pm

-Go to bank and deposit two checks that have been sitting on my counter for ages.

1:30 pm

-Go to CVS and pick up the prescriptions that I have not had time to pick up for two days.

2:00 pm

-Go to the post office to mail a rebate that I did for Advil.  I don't trust our mail man to get anything to the post office in a timely manner so going straight to the source is way easier since I am out that way anyway. Also, give up on the box tops that I was trying to collect and just mailed them since I was already at the post office.  I used $0.87 of stamps that I have in an envelope so that it was no money out of pocket for either mailing.  I just put all the old stamps into an envelope and I have spent a lot of time trying to use them up instead of paying for postage at the post office.  I have a bunch of $0.03 and $0.10 as well as a collection of old stamps that were discontinued before I used them... got to use up two $0.37 ones today with Christmas prints :)

- Stop and get gas while the prices are surprising lower again..knock on wood.

2:30 pm

-Home and wrangling my son inside with promises of returning back outside before grandma and grandpa get there so that we can play with chalk on the driveway.

-Put away laundry upstairs while trying to get out gift bags (see below)

-Get two gift bags out for my son to decorate with stickers for two birthday parties coming up.  I wrote the child's name on one side and he decided that he needed to practice and then write it on the other side by himself.  Handing him a permanent marker and hoping for the best, I watched him write the birthday boys name on the bag.  He got on a few stickers, we had a quick bathroom break, then snack of the cookie bars since he saw me cutting them.

-Cut cookie sheet into cookie bars and put into Tupperware for storage.

-Stop and make peanut butter sandwich to which he declares that he would like it open faced...pulled it apart and served again.... He would like it star shaped...Nope, peanut butter is too hard to cut after already on the bread and mommy is busy.

3:00 pm

-Take laundry basket and more recycling from coupon cutting downstairs.

-Bring up shower curtain from washer and throw it over the bar in the bathroom to dry a little.

-Stop to wash off peanut butter face before it gets wiped everywhere!! Close up of scary peanut butter face while proudly showing his sticker from the post office.

-Had to stop everything to call Grandma and Grandpa and then little man got irritated because he didn't think that Grandma understood him so I took the phone to talk and translate.

-Ran upstairs to get slippers because my feet were throbbing from standing most of the day in the kitchen.  Empty two reusable bags while I am up there and bring the empty bags back downstairs.

-Empty bag that needs to be sent to the manufacturer to get repaired that I wish I had together today to mail at the post office but at least I will get it ready for next week.

-Clean counters while talking on the phone with people that are arriving in less than two hours.

-Make ice tea with boiled water from the stove in my Henn Star pottery pitcher.

-Rinse more dishes in the sink and fill dishwasher...yup, there are still dishes in the sink.

3:30 pm

-Start to wash dishes and realize the scrubber is disgusting so go downstairs to get a new one and take the recycling with me on the way.

-Wash dishes and really grateful that I cleaned them all off and made a pile so that I all I had to do was wash with hot water and soap and not a ton of scrubbing.

-Stop to take off my son's band aid on his leg which he thought was going to hurt really bad so he whimpered the whole time but wanted it off.... never understand the curious nature of kids.

-Back to drying and putting away dishes with one more pot to wash.  Ugh, just made another by clearing off the chocolate chip bar pan!

-Heard dryer beep with the table cloth that I threw in after it washed with the shower curtain... don't want to go back downstairs to get it but if I don't then it will be wrinkled... internal struggle.  Bargained with myself and decided that I would get and fold the table cloth and then sit down instead of finishing the dishes.

4:00 pm

-Grab book and remember that I need to take the medicine that I picked up at the pharmacy but now my ice tea is empty.  Good thing that I just made a new pitcher!

-Fall into the soft cushions of the couch and don't get back up again forever...okay, that part was a dream because it is already 4:00 pm and I still need to clean the floor and take more laundry downstairs.  Mind churning and trying to come up with other things that I need to go before my parents get here in about one hour (mostly likely less).

4:45 pm

-Phone call comes in from the grandparents and they are going to be there in about 15 minutes.

-Get up and fold blankets and put everything away.

-Clean the floor.

-One more trip downstairs to put the laundry in the washer for the next load that I don't have time to run.

5:00 pm

-The grandparents have invaded...I mean arrived.  I took another load to the basement. Unloaded a bunch of bags in the kitchen and they were back out the door with my son at 5:07 to go to the dry cleaner and the store.  Going back to my book instead of being more productive!

-My husband came home so we talked for a little bit and then we walked a tape of some new shows that we missed.

6:00 pm

-Make dinner for the family including tacos and rice.  Luckily, already had the corn bread made.  I should have cut the lettuce and shredded the cheese but I just didn't get to earlier in the day.

6:45 pm

-Sitting down to dinner as a big family with grandma and grandpa to enjoy taco night.

7:30 pm

-Dinner over and everyone enjoying the dessert options quickly before bath time for the little man and tv news for grandpa.

8:00 pm

-Watched some television and taped some other shows that we want to see that we never have time to see!

10:00 pm

-Get up off couch because falling asleep so decide to go to bed but walk through the messy kitchen and decide to wash dishes and fill the dishwasher again!!

10:30 pm

-Go to bed and read my book and finally relax after a long day!!  I normally make it a little later but I was wiped out and falling asleep on the couch.

11:30 pm

-Falling asleep after the long day.

I would normally go to exercise class on Thursday but as you can see from my list, I really didn't have the extra time so I decided to try to get some stuff done and see if I could catch up.  I didn't get everything done that I wanted to get done.  I have one more coupon insert to cut that was on my to do list.  Trying to find my list to see if there is anything else that I have to do but I can't find it buried in my bag so leaving that to another day.  Do you see how the pictures slowed down as the day went on because I didn't even have the energy to get out the camera?!

Do your days sound like this with too much packed into one day to make it through?  What did you do today??  Hope that you had a good day and it was way more relaxing then mine.  I am aiming for more relaxed soon!!!  I just have to get it on my to do list :)

How I Plan a Monthly Menu

I know that there are a lot of people out there that thinks that this sounds like a monumental task but I swear it is really easy and saves lots of money.  It can also be done in a bunch of different ways to fit your family based on what you have on hand.  I am going to list out how I do it so that you can see how easy it is.

Step 1:  Get a Calendar

There are free printable monthly calendars available online through many websites.  There is a great list at Money Saving Mom where you can download one that fits your needs.  Even if you don't do the whole month at one time, it is nice one to choose because you can fill it in as you go.  I usually order free calendars online through Pillsbury and Betty Crocker so I end up using one of the free calendars for meal planning.  If you decide that you want a meal planning calendar, they are 75% off at most bookstores too.

Step 2:  Take an inventory

Go through your pantry and write everything down that is in it.  I usually write a list that breaks things down into categories like Pasta, Canned goods, and Other.  If you have lots, write on the front and back of the paper.  It helps me not only to organize when I am looking for something but it helps me find things when it comes time.  Make sure you make note of multiples; Don't just write that you have macaroni and cheese but write that you have 6 (promise it will be helpful later).  On another sheet of paper, I go through the freezer and write everything that I have in there.  I usually write my chicken together, followed by pork chops, ground beef and any other meat product.  Then I turn over the paper (feel free to use another piece if you like) to write the non-meat things that I have like flour tortillas, chicken broth, shredded cheese, tater tots and others.

Step 3:  Write a list of all the meals that your family likes to eat (and you can cook)

I did this a long time ago so obviously I don't go through and do it every month.  I ended up typing it up on the computer and adding a column for main meat component.  It helps to sort all the chicken dishes together so that if you have a package of chicken in your hands, you know that you aren't making sloppy joes since that calls for ground beef.  It is a good thing to go back and visit to add new dishes that your family likes that get added to the monthly meal planning in the future.

Step 4:  Sit Down and Plan out your days (make sure you bring steps 1-3 with you)

At the end of each month, I sit down with my calendar and my updated inventories and map out what I am going to have each day.  I start with a few nights of pasta (which I do once a week and plan on the nights that are going to busy or we are going to be out all day).  If I do an Olive Oil Spaghetti one week, the next week is Sausage Penne so that it feels like we aren't having the same thing all the time because it is only really once or twice a month (throwing in some Fried Zucchini Spaghetti to mix it up).  Then, I put down Homemade Pizza alternately with Homemade Calzone (which I usually do on Fridays).  Again, it is something that is similar because I am using a homemade pizza dough but we change the ingredients to do Buffalo Chicken Pizza or White Pesto Pizza so that we aren't eating sausage and pepperoni every week.  I fit in the other things that are in the freezer and pantry in the spaces.  I will put one day with marinated chicken and rice and the next week put a different chicken with pasta.  Having a calendar helps me to spread out the meals so that we aren't eating the same meal every night with different flavors.

Some people feel it is easier to have assigned days of the weeks with themes like:

Pasta
Chicken
Beef or Steak
Fish
No Meat or Vegetarian
Soup and/or Sandwich
Pizza
Breakfast for Dinner

Example of Week:

Monday- Spiedies Chicken with white rice
Tuesday- Kraft Fresh Take Pork Chops with mac and cheese
Wednesday- French Dip Sloppy Joes with frozen rolls
Thursday- Olive Oil Spaghetti with pizza dippers
Friday- Homemade Calzone
Saturday- Chicken Tortilla Soup (from freezer)/ Herb Butter Whole Chicken
Sunday- Kielbasa with sweet potato fries/ Ground Beef Tacos

Step 5:  Separate out food for the week

I know that this seems like it isn't necessary but it is helpful to pull out the food you are going to need for the week.  If I have to defrost a whole chicken, I know that it takes at least 3 days in the fridge.  If I have to defrost chicken tenders, overnight is fine.  Usually ground beef takes 1-2 days in the fridge.  So planning ahead is the only way to make this work.  I have a downstairs freezer so over the weekend, I pull out all the things that I need and put them in the upstairs freezer or fridge based on the need for the week.  It is much easier if you have everything in one place so that you don't forget to defrost something and get to dinner time without anything to eat.

Step 6:  Write a Shopping List

I know that most people don't have a freezer and pantry full of a month worth of food although I think that you will be surprised.  I write a list of the things that we need that are perishable like lettuce with a little note that it is for tacos.  The great thing is that after you have purchased the lettuce, you can plan for salad another night because you know that you are going to have it in the house.  If I buy potatoes for the month, I try to plan multiple dishes that use potatoes and make sure that they are all used before they go bad.  If there is a vegetable that we like to have with a dish, I make note of what we would like to have but if there is a special deal when I get to the store, we end up having that veggie instead.  It saves a lot of time and money if you aren't wondering if you need more spaghetti sauce while you are at the store because you have them at home.  As you work on this planning process, you can work on stocking up on things at the lowest price.  If you know that you use spaghetti sauce (and your family has a favorite kind), when it is on sale you pick up four instead of just one then you have enough to last for a few months and you have saved that much money to put back into your budget.

Step 7:  Have a backup plan and be flexible

Especially when you start, make sure that you can substitute something in case the plan doesn't go right.  If you forget to take out the meat to defrost or you simply didn't have enough time to make the meal, have a few go to dishes that you can whip up.  I used to never plan for a pasta meal and that was my go to in case of an emergency.  Now I put it on the calendar and if things aren't working right, the nights get switched with the pasta night.  It still leaves the same things on the menu for the week just in a different order.  Whether you are doing this to save money, be healthier or whatever goal, a frozen pizza is not the end of the world as a dinner solution on a busy night.  It is still much more healthy and frugal than getting in the car and going to a restaurant.

Do you think that you can do this??  I do!!!  If I can do it, then I think that anyone can do it.  Do you want help??  I would love to help!!  Just let me know what questions you have and what I can do to help you start your way to saving money through menu planning.

Books I Read in 2012

Last year, I set a goal of increasing my reading and hoped to get to 4 books per month.  It used to be one of my favorite hobbies but since I got pregnant (reading made me sick-almost like car sickness) and then had a little man running around, I didn't get to read anything.  With my new goal posted on the blog (and all of you to hold me accountable), I set to reading as much as I could from the library and my bookshelves.  Here is the post of all of things that I read in 2012.

Books I Plan to Read in 2013

I moved all my books around on my shelf to figure out what I own that I still hadn't read and what was still on my list to read.  I found that there were 19 books left on my shelf listed below.  The second is a list of the Robert Parker novels that I want to read in order so I will start reserving at the library to complete 19 books on the list in my notebook.  It seems like fate that I have 19 books on both list (until I got ahead of myself and read one in December) so I am going to say that this is a complete list plus the books from the library that I find about motherhood, kids, cooking, and living a frugal life.  I added the list of books that I already reserved to start reading soon!!

Below is a list of all of the books that I want to read during 2013 and I will update at the end of each month based on which ones I complete (plus whatever gets added from the library).  Any suggestions are welcome and I look forward to hearing what you are reading too!!!

End of the year update:  I crossed through all the books that I read this year and the books that aren't crossed through are still sitting on my shelf unread.  I did a little bit too much library reading and not nearly enough reading for the books that I already owned.  I tried to stop it during the year but I just started reading more and more from the library and I couldn't stop myself.   How did you do this year??? Make sure you set a goal for next year and keep track of how many books you read!!  Can't wait to hear :)

I am starting off January with a Robert Parker novel from the library and then seeing where I go from there!!!  Are you going to be reading lots this year?  This list gets me on track for reading over 40 books plus others that pop up during the year.  I am aiming for 4 books a month and hoping for lots more.

UPDATE:  I have been reading over 10 books a month and by the 6 month mark have already read 84 books.  I know that there are plenty more to read in the next six months!

The super great thing about your library is that you get all the books for FREE!!!  I hope that you check out your local library and find some books that you are interested in too :)
